Joao Cancelo underwent medical tests this afternoon at the Istituto Clinico Humanitas in Rozzano after picking up an injury yesterday while training with Portugal. The tests revealed that he has suffered a tear to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee. Cancelo’s condition will be evaluated week to week.

Recovery times differ depending on the severity of the injury:
A minor, or grade 1, MCL tear can take from a few days to a week and a half to heal sufficiently for you to return to normal activities, including sports.
A grade 2 tear can take from two to four weeks to heal.
A grade 3 tear usually takes from four to eight weeks to heal, unless it is associated with damage to the ACL, in which case the recovery time may be longer.

I just hope it was caused during training time so that it would be only minor or grade 2 at best. No way did his teammates commit a sliding tackle while he was running at full speed.

GdS (link): "Everybody is available for play [against SPAL], except Joao Cancelo who has finally dropped his crutches and can start his rehabilitation."

Goal.com (link): "Cancelo back by end of October."

Also says that Spaletti will try D'Ambrosio at CB once Cancelo returns.

Spalletti (link): "Cancelo? He’ll be ready before the derby (on Oct 15). He’s keen to come back, but we still have to wait a bit longer because the thing that hurts most of all is a possible relapse. For now, we can afford to keep waiting. There’s no urgency and therefore we’ll take all the time in the world for him to recover in the best way possible."

I can't wait for Cancelo to get on the pitch. We need more attacking firepower, no matter where on the pitch it comes from.

Agreed. Dalbert also does not seem fully comfortable yet. Surely some transitional period from Ligue 1 is required, so no reason to panic.

But the type of issues we saw generating chances against e.g. Crotone would be helped immensely by FB's who are legit attacking threats going forward. Could make all the difference in the world.

In the end, we got it done with Nagatomo & D'Ambrosio, but those guys should both be well-established as backups in a couple months.
