Italian Report Discusses The 3 Possible Scenarios Should The Serie A Be Postponed
A report from today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Repubblica has analysed what could happen to the League should Serie A been postponed due to the Coronavirus emergency.
The report details three different scenarios that could occur should the contagion be dangerous enough for the league to be postponed.
The first is that the FIGC could ask UEFA to postpone this summer’s European Championships slightly, to allow the postponed games to be played. The international competition is scheduled to start on the 12th June, but the players are needed by their national teams from the 1st June.A postponement to the autumn or next summer allows the league to be stopped briefly, before finishing the games in May and June.
The second scenario would be to create an alternative calendar, the report continues, should UEFA deny the FIGC’s request to postpone Euro 2020. There is an idea that the games could be played every two days instead of three, which would be a much busier calendar but allow the season to finish in time. The Coppa Italia could also be pushed back to August, although this is unlikely.
The final scenario would be to end the season entirely, the report highlights. The only precedent for this comes from the 1915 season, when the league was suspended on 23rd May due to the First World War.On Tuesday this idea will be discussed, with some presidents pushing for the current league table to be frozen, allowing everyone to remain in their categories but without awarding a winner. So far this is no agreed upon idea for awarding a winner.
