Greetings fellow Interisti! Long time since I last posted anything here, but wanted to share some thoughts after today’s game (Sadly, but here we go again with the long posts). Didn’t know where was the best place to put this, so moderators please feel free to move this post where it is best suited.
Now, let’s be brutally honest – the scudetto this year will be decided between two teams: Juve and Napoli. Those that think otherwise (Or God forbid still think Inter can win it) are living in fantasy land. In my opinion what separates these teams from the rest is quite simple – consistency (the squad itself and the play on the pitch) and confidence. Yes, both these teams have had some major changes, but the cores of the teams have remained intact for some time now and I think some people here truly underrate how important that is in regards to results. Personally hope Napoli finally brakes through and wins it this year. Sarri has been the signing of the season for Napoli and he might have finally unlocked their full potential.
The race for 3rd place though is wide open, but I still favor both Fiore and Roma at this point. Both these teams have the talent to beat anyone in the league on their day. Fiore (quite similar to Inter) up until now have really only dropped points against teams that are in the top half of the table so we should expect them to continue picking up points and beating the lower placed teams. Roma hit total rock bottom with Garcia and from now I think they will only go upwards, performance and result wise, with Spalletti. Thus the race for 3rd will probably be interesting right up until the end of the season, but with the talent at their disposal, I think Roma will take it in the end. Also keep in mind we have away matches basically against all our direct rivals – Fiore, Roma, Juve, Milan, even Lazio and Sassuolo will also be away games that will be tough.
Now to our beloved Inter.. I didn’t think we would be this high up the table at this point in the season and I have to applaud the team for that at least. I also come back to the consistency factor here. We have what – 4 or 5 (Handa, D’Ambrosio, Medel, Icardi) somewhat consistent starters at best only from last season’s starting eleven right? That’s a big change right there and you can’t expect instant results under such circumstances. Thus realistically I will be more than satisfied with a EL finish this season.
Nevertheless, what I did expect at this point is to see at least some sort of consistency in regards to the IDENTITY of this team and what we are building for the future. Yes, we had some great glimpses of individual brilliances up until now, but all those 1-0 wins were great RESULT wise, but PERFORMANCE wise we have been quite underwhelming. Even now I see little cohesiveness between the players (No wonder since we see a different line-up every match), our link-up play between the midfield and attack is just non-existent at times (it’s like a curse for like the 6th season in a row) and I won’t even get started about the formations that Mancini sometimes selects to go with. Honestly, what has he been doing at Inter for almost an entire year now? Talk about a coach without personality.. Does he even study the opposition before matches? As someone mentioned – ordinary players become world class against us.. I wonder why is that? They sure don’t play like that against the other top teams.
One game we go out attacking straight from the start, the other we look like a bottom table team.. I will gladly accept playing like we did during the last Sassuolo game – clear cut chances created by us, taking the game to the opponent, dictating the play. That is what we should be working towards. I will gladly accept the growing pains of the missed chances and stupid mistakes that result in losses, finish the season 9th but at least we will have some consistency, learning the system (style of play) with every match we play, play without pressure, players will feel much more comfortable with one another as a result and carry that confidence into the new season. Of course, each case is different, but teams like Dortmund, Liverpool, even Roma and Napoli all had to go through seasons of growing pains and numerous losses before they finally started clicking.
Everything that is being done right now is with a short-term view – qualify for the CL.. And what then? If we will still be playing like garbage.. Just being in the CL doesn’t make a team attractive to top players. At least to those top players that want to WIN and not just to make money, there is a big difference between the two. The same goes with the fans.. Who wants to watch a team that sleep walks for more than half of the entire match? Football is all about entertainment first and foremost. I applaud Thohir and the marketing team that are putting in the work to expand the Inter brand globally, but the best selling pitch to any football fan around the world is the product on the pitch.
Ok, enough with the negativity. Let’s finally win at the Sao Paolo boys! Then send a statement to Milan before the derby by dominating freaking Carpi at home! Forza Inter!
