Inter set to drop three-man defence
Frank de Boer looks set to drop his 3-4-1-2 experiment in favour of a 4-3-3
After the use of a three-man defence failed to deliver results against Chievo, Inter coach Frank de Boer has his side working on a return to the 4-3-3.
The Nerazzurri fell 2-0 to the Flying Donkeys on Sunday, getting the Dutchman’s era off to a disappointing start.
While the tactician blamed the defeat on Inter’s lack of fitness, the 46-year-old has been roundly criticised for using a three-man backline, a tactic deemed unsuitable for the current side.
It looks as though De Boer is ready to move on from the experiment though, as the Nerazzurri used a 4-3-3 in training on Wednesday with Ever Banega fielded in front of the defence.
The Argentine is widely seen as an attacking midfielder, but given Inter don’t have any deep-lying creative players in the middle of the park, De Boer is experimenting with him in a new position.
Gary Medel and Geoffrey Kondogbia occupied the other two midfield spots, while Eder, Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic were in attack.
Miranda and Jeison Murillo look set to start in central defence, while Yuto Nagatomo and Davide Santon, not Danilo D’Ambrosio, were on the right and left flanks in training, meaning they could feature this Sunday against Palermo.
