Francesco Moriero: Blog: Legend of Tomorrow?
After a modest playing career that saw him perform at the highest level for Inter, Roma and Napoli, Francesco Moriero is the latest success story from Italy’s acclaimed coaching school at Coverciano.
In 2006, after obtaining his UEFA coaching licence, Moriero rather surprisingly took charge of Ivory Coast club Africa Sports for one season before returning to the peninsula as boss of Serie C1 side Lanciano.
Again after just one year at the helm he switched to fellow C1 side Crotone where his diligent work on the training ground came to fruition as his side clinched promotion to Serie B through the end of season play-offs.
The Pitagorici tifosi were looking forward to Moriero carrying on his good work in Italy’s second tier when yet again he jumped ship and took up the reigns at Frosinone, a small club from the Lazio region of Italy.
Eleven games into the current campaign and his side sit proudly on top of the Serie B championship, with Moriero earning plaudits from throughout the footballing fraternity.
His exciting style of play has seen his charges lose just two of their opening 11 fixtures and now they must be considered serious promotion contenders in what would surely be one of football’s greatest fairytales, on a par with the achievements of Chievo a few years ago.
On taking up his new post he promptly went back to his old stomping ground in Crotone to reacquaint himself with striker Caetano Calil. He and Gennaro Troianiello have been the main focal point of the team’s meteoric rise to pole position in the table, and it is no surprise that the Canarini are the Division’s top scorers as Moriero’s attacking policies guarantee goals throughout the whole squad.
Working within a tight transfer structure, Moriero has brought in two young starlets in midfielder Francesco Bolzoni from Inter and defender Lorenzo Del Prete from Siena, whilst other seasoned professionals from the lower reaches of the Italian game have added their invaluable experience to the team.
Moriero seemingly has the balance absolutely spot on, another testament to the Coverciano training academy that has produced some of the world’s greatest tacticians of the modern era.
The word on the street is that this exciting young tactician is bound for the top flight sooner rather than later and maybe, just maybe, the man from Lecce will be the next ‘Special One’.
