so now lets judge midfielders using goals and assists? come on. kovacic was not consistent last season but he showed a lot of consistency in the tail end. if he had stayed instead of being sold, he would have been our most important mf.

in the context of a long term project, it was a stupid move. granted, kondogbia and perisic isnt that bad, but our midfield is really poor now and i dont think we will finish in the top 3 with this kind of football. no doubt its possible though.

Passing? Hernanes has more key passes (source, WhoScored.com) per match. So did Shaqiri. Pass success rate? Medel, Brozovic, Kuzmanovic all do better. Tackles? Same story there.

Kovacic had a lot of potential, and probably in a year or two years would be our most important midfielder, but last year, he was not.

Was Kovacic an important player for us when you consider the entirety of last season? No. Was he our most important midfielder at the time of his sale? Absolutely.

Are you willing to say Brozovic and Kuzmanovic are more accurate passers than Kovacic? Or that Hernanes can create chances? Those stats also can't measure the fact none of our midfielders could dictate play like Mateo.

Well, the stats seem to state that both Brozovic and Kuzmanovic are more accurate passers, yes.

Hernanes definitely creates chances, he just does it really fucking inconsistently.


Kovacic CAN dictate play. But he rarely DOES. And that's the point. The difference between can, and do.

Was Inzaghi ever a world class striker? I don't think so because he was so limited.

I'll agree that he was decisive and now that I think about it the Juve argument was fucked because they replaced him with Trezeguet, but still. Icardi won't be a world class player if he is so limited. Football has also changed a lot since then. We all saw how a more rounded player like Diego Costa in place of Falcao changed Atletico and allowed more players to get into goalscoring positions.
