Now that I think about it more...

I think actually people overrate the importance of wing-back in this formation or rather they complicate the role too much. For players it'd actually be a dead simple role and everything you got to do is quite clear and mistakes are usually covered. I think Jonathan can do a decent job there as well as Zanetti.

As long as they can cover ground and be reasonable in defence, it is not that impossible position to play and you see that most players around Italy have adapted quite quickly to it. Attacking is a bonus, but not a necessity for wing-back. All of ours have enough attacking ability.

If our team overall manages to be far more of unit (compared to last seasons) then I think improvement on Jonathan/Zanetti/Nagatomo will get us max extra one win in the league. Jonathan was quite solid for Parma in that formation and his end of the season was reasonable with us too despite the team being quite horrible. The game will be won or lost in midfield.

Wingback should be far from priority signing, esp not a 10 million one when we scrape together money. While I do consider Basta to be better wingback than all of those players right now, the positive impact of it isn't worth the expense.

When I saw the words "Jonathan can do a decent job", i immediately stopped reading your comment. The only thing that Jonathan can do a decent job at is sitting on the bench! He will be a mere squad player for us.

The importance and necessary qualities of the wingbacks depends entirely on the midfielders you use.

We wont have a proper AM playmaker like Hamsik who is a major threat with both goals and assists or have several players capable of pulling 5+ assists in midfield like Juve does. This makes the wingbacks much more important for us and they will have alot of responsibility.

If we play Guarin, Kova and a DM then getting quality wingbacks should be top priority, since those 3 might make 10 assists combined throughout a season if they are lucky. That midfield with our current wingbacks will get you nothing except frustrated forwards up front.

Either that or selling Guarin and getting a midfielder with a brain who can score and assist much more.

Looking at the kind of impact Maggio, Zuniga, Asamoah, Litchsteiner have had for Napoli & Juve last season, I am afraid I have to disagree with you on this one. I think Nagatomo can do this role reasonably well, but I am yet to be convinced about Jonathan. I would prefer a bit more quality. I am not totally convinced re Basta either, but if Mazzarri thinks he is the right guy, I am willing to go along with that. But if we can get our hands on a Zuniga or a Isla, I would be delighted.

I think that Isla and/or Zuniga aren't possible. Mazzari may have to look for someone that we didn't know about or use a youth player like Mbaye or Braghi.
