Majeed Abdallah tells me something, however in 88 I didn't really see iranian football, as I had no access to it living in Austria.
LOL Mehdi, it took me a week to answer this question. I saw it the same day you posted it, but I wanted to write something worthy of Majed.
He is my hero, and the reason why I loved soccer in the first place. I remember when I was 7 years old, watching a soccer game between Nassr (Majed's team) and Helal (eternal enemies.)
It was for a cup final, and both teams were as enemies as ever. It was in 87, around the time Saudi soccer was starting to prosper. Anyway, with the game 0-0, Majed got a cross from the left wing of a FK. He was marked by two defenders, but he still outjumped them and scored.
For me, it was like a fairytale. The man flew and headed the ball, their GK was one heck of a GK, but he froze watching the ball go in. It was better than seeing Michael Jordan fly, it was the most beautiful soccer goal - and the first one - I ever saw. That goal became legendary, and is still remember by most people, except for Helal fans.
When I grew a bit older, and could get my own money, the first thing I did was to go to the local video store and buy that game. Few years back, when I went to our old home there, I couldn't find the tape, I felt like crying.
To me, he is probably what JZ is to most Inter fans. I love him 10000 times more than JZ, and as much as I love JZ, he is nothing compared to that player in my eyes. I hope I am not offending anyone, but that's how much I loved him.
Anyway, I will finally answer your question
I will post his pic here and tell you more. He played between 1979-1998, scoring 546 goals, despite missing 2-3 full seasons because of injuries.
He was one of the first players from the region to score against teams like Brazil and England. This may seem silly these days, but in 1984, it was an honour to any player from Asia or Africa to score against Brazil.
He also had amazing goals. Beside his sublime heading, his specialty was getting the ball in a breakaway, dragging one defender, then dropping the GK dead with a slight shake.
One of his unforgetable goals was when he literally ripped the net in one of his goals. It was unbelievable, everyone was astonished and it took the ref five mintues to decide whether it was a goal or not. He had to go and visually inspect the net, where a slight tear was present!
Not only was he a good player, but he was a role model. Just like JZ, his foes respect him before his friends. Never showed off or acted stupidly, he was a role model.
Here is his pic:
This link is from 1996 about him being the player with the most international cap in the world:
