it's what United offered when they were trying to get him but couldn't offload Maguire. Beppe closed the deal for 30+bonuses

Pavard lacks Skriniar’s strength and perhaps tackling precision but he is way more versatile, technical (first touch, passing, shooting). He also loves volleys. He is more well rounded modern footballer it seems to me.

Comparing Skriniar with Pavard is pointless, Skriniar never really settled to the RCB role. Darmian was simply a better RCB in this set up, better fit, better at going forward, more stable and consistent, despite being clearly not as good as Skriniar as a pure defender.

Not pointing fingers at anyone but I definitely feel there's this weird revisionist history with Skriniar due to hurt feelings over how he left. Skriniar was fine at RCB. No, he obviously wasn't a natural fit, but he wasn't half as bad as people make out. His passing was underrated too but people liked to dismiss it because of his awkward stance when carrying the ball.

All in all Skriniar played 4 seasons in a 3 CB formation and I'd say that he was a success once he adapted to the role and when he was fit:

2019/20 - he was shit. Put it down to a rough adjustment period or difficult learning curve but he was horrible
2020/21 - scudetto season and back to an excellent level
2021/22 - also excellent
2022/23 - poor, but a write off of a season for him. He was injured for most of it anyway and only played in the early part of the season when the entire squad was atrocious, defence in particular. Seems unfair to single him out but people conflate their blame with their hurt feelings.

Skriniar should still be here but as a central CB. I don’t see Pavard as a replacement in the squad. He left on a free this is Onana money we’re spending. De Vrij should have been the one leaving on a free.

Either way we needed a Pavard in this squad.

with halfway competent owners we could have had either:

1. skriniar - bremer - bastoni
2. pavard - skriniar - bastoni

And that is with reasonable investment, not some fantasy spending. Issue is - we have cheap and debt king owners.

Great signing if happens. Finally something exciting to cheer up after the clusterfuck of Samardzic deal. If we replace Correa with someone better and add another relible midfielder I'll give this mercato a 7 or 8.

This makes us a top3 guarantee a.k.a. Scudetto contender, better chance than last season IMO. Going to be exciting for sure.

Done deal: Benjamin Pavard is an Inter player . La Gazzetta dello Sport has no doubts on the matter: "The ok from president Steven Zhang , who arrived yesterday, was needed for the definitive relaunch that brought the Nerazzurri and Bayern to an agreement - we read -. Thirty million euros plus another two in bonuses linked to team objectives, not guaranteed: these are the terms of the negotiation, closed on time and in the manner foreseen". In the meantime, Bayern seem to have identified the Frenchman's replacement in Geertruida from Feyenoord.

Nothing new. But Cafe was right. We did not wait for Bayern to find a replacement (make no sense if they already wanted to sell). We were waiting for our president.
