Any one been to Palermo?

Me and a mate are heading out to Palermo at the end of november for a week if he can get the time off work.

in the middle of the trip were going to the the Palermo - Catania game but are looking for things to do other wise and just generally wondering about the place

from what i see its a big city (650k ppl?), we'll probably be doing a fair bit of drinking and pizza eating

whats the weather likely to be like? how expensive are things like pizza's and beer in comparison with Milan?

Palermo is one of the hotter cities that people have actually heard of in Italy. I don't know about the population of Palermo itself, but if you include the surrounding areas there are deffs more than 1 million people there. I don't drink, so I can't help you with that. I've only actually been there once.

Food/drink prices are pretty standard for most of Italia, nowhere near as much as you'd get in central Milano that's for sure. Drink isn't really cheap in any bars in most of the country, but I'd definitely say it's cheaper outside of the big few cities - I've paid 15€ for a beer in Milano clubs before :|

As for weather, it's not impossible for it to be cold, but it's very very rare that it gets that way, I would say expect anything from 16-18C daytime in general.

Stuff to do, honestly depends on how far you want to travel etc, the city has an amazing cathedral, architecture is something you'd expect more in an arab country. There's also the palace & the catacombs that are pretty popular tourist wise. Then there are the beaches <3 Mondello has always been my favourite, it's pretty stunning even in winter. If you're into the Godfather movies & get chance to hire a car, take a trip to Corleone village, which is in Palermo province.. about 60km from the city I think.

Honestly, I could talk all day about my city, if you want any specific things to do just ask Shame i'm not over there right now, we coulda partied at my house/taken the boat out

looks like theres a coppa Italian game on the Tuesday, is that likely to be sold out or will tickets be available form the ticket office? (ill have to go there any way to pick up the tickets ive booked)

we'll have a wander up Mont Pellogrino one day, looks like a good veiwpoint on google earth

Yeh Coppa Italia is very unlikely to ever sell out, you should be able to buy on the door

Pretty sure it shouldn't be too difficult to get to Corleone, there used to be a coach that would run there & i'm sure it still does. Getting around the city in general is pretty cheap also, it's usually 1€ for 1 hour worth of travel - just don't forget to time stamp the ticket before using it like on any Italian public transport.

Let me know closer to the time & I can try to give you addresses/bus numbers etc

Kato covered most, but, I'll add my bit.
Palermo is wonderful and I'm trying hard to make the derby also, but it's dependent on quite a few things. If I'm around at the time, I'll gladly show you around.

Mount Pellegrino is one of my top 3 favourite places in the worlddd [and I travel often, so that really means something] and for sure a must see of the city. I usually hike it, but there's a bus from the city that goes up also, I believe.
Mount Etna, which I've only been to maybe three times but it's a wonderful experience each time.
And the Massimo Theatre, if you're indeed a fan of The Godfather [part 3 specifically], go check it out, along with the Corleone village. Buses do run there and I can also help if needed with sorting out transportation. The theatre is the biggest in Italy, I believe. It's stunning.
Also the Zisa Castle! Hahah, there's so many lovely things to see, I could go on and on but I don't really know something specific you might be looking for... it is indeed a pretty large city, and traffic will show that also, Kato said it, it is a lot more Arab-esque in architectural terms [which reminds me, Kalsa! A section of the main city, another beautiful place to visit] but it's part of what makes the city so amazing. I hope you and your friend do get to go and have an amazing visit!
