Say what?

GdS reveals - Ranocchia was so close to join Milan, especially if the Rossoneri were to sell Mexes. Instead, Ranocchia remains at Inter.

That might have not been so bad. It probably would have meant we keep Hernanes (and perhaps Andreolli as back up CB). Hernanes could have been a useful option to have... definitely more than Ranocchia.

I don't understand the hate for ranocchia - he has some slip-ups but literally ever CB does. Definitely a scapegoat for the defensive shit that was inter last year. Is he great? no. But he isn't shit either. Chillllllll Bros

Just to clarify, I don't hate Ranocchia. I always maintained that he was a gifted CB whose development was fucked by Inter's constantly changing coaches, tactical systems (3-man to 4-man defence, high line to deep line, etc). We fucked him up rather badly. If he had gone to Juventus, he could have become Italy's best CB.

I also think that our current system, because Mancini likes to play a high defensive line combined with possession football that is susceptible to fast counters, it amplifies Ranocchia's weaknesses. If he had any sense, he would have pushed for a transfer this summer. He is of little use to Mancini.

agreed... your analysis of Rano is spot on - not hateful or making him a scapegoat.

I like Rano, I don't think he is as bad as some of you make him see and also he is not as good as he can be, I think he can still get better, or show that he is better, but well... He is not going to do it here, I'd probably like to see how he can work with Murillo, but since it's not happening and since I'm tired of reading douchebags on his facebook page, I hope he leaves in winter or next summer, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

So is it official that Icardi is the new club captain? I still haven't heard any official word from the club regarding the issue but I did see Icardi posted on twitter after the Atalanta match "proud to be the new captain of this great group" etc.

Seems somewhat fucken ridiculous to me but I suppose you can't have a captain who's on the bench and not on the pitch.

Marco Materazzi on Ranocchia. Can't say I disagree with a single word. I also have the feeling he's going to play a strong derby.

Former Inter star Marco Materazzi backs Mauro Icardi for captain, but feels Andrea Ranocchia should’ve left already.

The Nerazzurri face arch rivals Milan in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday evening. Click here for a match preview.

“Considering what we’ve seen so far this season, it’s only right to call Inter the favourites,” Matrix told FcInterNews.it.

“They are the current Serie A leaders and have more quality. Having said that, I’d prefer to call Milan favourites, because usually the underdogs win this fixture.

“The club signed the right players, the ones they needed, and now must prove they are a team. I wouldn’t talk about the Scudetto, as we are analysing a completely new side here. The primary objective must be qualifying for the Champions League.”

Ranocchia was the Inter captain last term, but has since been bumped down to the bench and the armband given to striker Icardi.

“Ranocchia certainly should’ve asked for greater clarity from Roberto Mancini and the club. To be captain and second choice is frankly disappointing. Now he must do well to react to criticism and climb back up after some unimpressive performances.

“It’s unfair to say it was Ranocchia’s fault, as last season all of Inter wasn’t the real Inter, or at least didn’t play like it. The problems in defence were down to a collection of issues.

“I had already advised Andrea to go elsewhere over the summer, as the fans never really loved him and unfortunately he arrived at Inter during a tricky time.

“In my view, it would be best if he left, but at the start of the transfer window and not right at the end. Teams are built in April or May.

“I am one of Andrea’s greatest admirers and I’m convinced he is one of the top three Italian defenders. Perhaps the Inter fans will think me mad for saying that, but it’s what I believe.

“It’s beyond doubt that if Ranocchia had committed that foul against Carpi rather than Jeison Murillo, it would’ve caused a disastrous response. Fortunately the referee didn’t give the penalty, but we must limit certain challenges.”

Icardi is the captain now after becoming joint Capocannoniere with Verona’s Luca Toni last season.

“I absolutely agree with this decision,” continued Materazzi. “Icardi is someone who gets himself talked about off the field, but above all on it. He’s got balls. He reminds me of myself at times.

“I’ve got Inter in my heart and remain an Interista, but I doubt there’s any space for me there now. Other choices were made, which I respect, then the results will tell us who was right.”

Yeah but Ranocchia would tell him I'm already a decent defender I don't know what you mean by descent defender.

I really hope he will do well in this derby.

Yes he makes mistakes quite often when he plays regularly. But if he already set his mind as a backup centreback now, I'm pretty sure he will not screw this up.

Shortest reign as captain? Unless we are counting JJ's one-game stint with the armband?

hernst marktl was officially club captain for 2 games in 1908.

giovanni giacomazzi, giovanni invernizzi, bruno bolchi, and giacinto facchetti all had the armband for only 1 season.

I'm pretty sure that in 40 years' time, no one will know who the fuck Ranocchia is, either.

If he plays that is.
