I don't think the coach at the time cares about these things. Obviously he felt like Gagliardini was a better option than Asllani when you want to defend a lead and have someone chase opponents and perhaps win some defensive headers.Agree to some extent, but shouldn't he really be chosen before Gags as a sub? If nothing else to increase his exchange value as you astutely indicate.
I mean, Asllani cannot do any of that, whereas Gagliardini in theory can. He's not very good at it of course.
