yeap... since new year they've been playing bad... They did have some injuries, but still, this looks like a completely different team from the one we saw at the start of the season, or last year.

Yeah, to update something I wrote yesterday, Real Sociedad about to drop to 1-4-5 in their last 10 games (all comps), whereas when we last faced them they were 12-6-3 (all comps) on the season and on a ~69 point pace in La Liga (they're down to a 56 point pace now). Injuries, whatever, the wheels fell off over there.

xG 3.77-0.41 in Germany tonight, not posting for the sake of xG spamming again but moreso to backup how it felt, that Lazio created absolutely nothing worthwhile tonight. Bugs vs. windshield tonight, absolutely got smashed.

It was already mentioned during the first leg Lazio should have taken advantage of Bayern red card and try to score a second goal. Going to Munich with 1-0 was never going to be enough.

In two matches better team usually qualifies.

Lazio fell as really should be anticipated that it didn’t happen before is really a miracle as they are a rather mediocre side.

Also anything other than PSG going through would have been surprising

Yeah, not getting at least a second goal to put more pressure on Bayern when they were playing 10v11 was a loss in itself. They were given 20 minutes to really give themselves a chance going into the return leg and they were unable to do it. Villarreal managed to make a 1-0 1st leg win stand up in 2022 when they went to Munich (got a 1-1 draw that night), can't think of many other times where Bayern were eliminated at home in the second leg when they were still in shouting distance going into it.

We've been watching Lazio all season, we know how impotent they've looked. They've scored 32 goals in 27 Serie A games, which is pathetic for a "big" club. They're in 9th place for a very good reason. "Crisis Bayern" and so much other shit, but even Bayern at their (vastly overstated) worst probably still take all 11 players in a combined XI of these two teams.

Round of 16 is more and more boring after every years, 2 or 3 good matchups top per year.

Let’s see new format would change that

So Lazio is out, Bayern continues, win for the Germans.

Sociedad is out. Hopefully both Atletico and Barcelona are out too, but at least Atletico. Spain shouldn't threaten Italy's top2 spot anymore.

But Germany is the enemy number 1. We need West Ham to kick Freiburg out so that Germany would have only max 3 clubs to accumulate points for them. Then we need tough draw for Bayern in quarters. Leverkusen might go and even win the EL but Dortmund should be out of CL at least in quarters. I assume they win at home against PSV.

Avg points ranking
1. Italy 15.571 (6 teams left)
2. Germany 14.928 (5 teams left)
3. England 13.875 (6 teams left)

I don't know how the new format would change anything. It's around the same teams who are top16 in CL year in year out I guess. "Group stage" is now "league stage" but after that it's all the same.

Damn CL teams are indeed much stronger at home. Those missed chances gonna bite us so hard :palm:

The lack of away goals rule isn't helping us either.

Tbf, did the away goals rule ever benefit Inter? We're the club that once got eliminated on away goals in a two-legged tie where both games were played in the same fucking stadium. We got eliminated by Tottenham in the 2013 Europa League because of an away goal scored in extra time of the 2nd leg, and we got eliminated by Tottenham again by tiebreaker in the 2018-'19 group stage because they scored an away goal in a 2-1 L while we failed to score an away goal in a 1-0 L. We also had an away goal defeat against one of those Spanish teams in the mid-'00s (I don't feel like looking it up), also an away goal defeat in 2012 that was our last glimmer of hope before the banter era...the only time I can think of off the top where we advanced on away goals was the 2nd leg comeback in Munich in 2011.

The governing bodies for this sport are all fucking terrible but eliminating the away goals tiebreaker is one of the things they've actually gotten right in recent years.
