Zenga is an Inter goalkeeping legend.
In terms of coaching, he is is still in the very early stages of his career and yet everyone is touting him for a place on Inter's bench. I think many Interisti fail to differentiate and make the distinction between what he did for us as a player and what he can do as a coach. Quite frankly, the two are poles apart and it pisses me off that everyone believes he is Inter material. Based on what?
Lets put a few things in perspective. The likes of Trapattoni and Capello are great coaches as they left Italy and won championships in Germany and Spain. Zenga has achieved sweet fukc all and the same can be said for Matthaus in his coaching career and yet there are posters who romanticise about our former legends coming back to coach their beloved Nerazzurri.
The simple fact of the matter is that Zenga does not coach in Italy because he can not stand the pressure in terms of media attention and scrutiny. Coaching overseas, he still gets treated like a celebrity but is well aware of the fact that as soon as he goes home, football will get a great deal more serious.
Lastly, if you disagree with everything I have said, you may want to consider the following: When Zlatan first arrived at Inter last season, he was a former Hunchback. Interisti are the most loving supporters because they accepted Zlatan with open arms and loved him as if had been at the club for his whole career.
How is this relevant?
The analogy is similar. Many of you feel the same way about Zenga as a coach but the fact of the matter is that he has done very little, in terms of coaching, to deserve such love and respect.
What I am essentially trying to say is that you should have some discretion. Let Walter earn our love and respect the way Zlatan deservedly did in his first season at Inter.
Zenga may have been a Legend goalkeeper for Inter but I stand by my comments that he is staying away from coaching in Italy because he does not want things to get too serious, too quickly. Only time will tell but I believe it will be some time before Zenga decides to make the move to coach in Italy and only then will you be able to seriously guage his coaching abilities.
As a final note, I would not want Zenga, Matthaus or Bergomi (if he ever decides to coach) to coach Inter in the future. Why? Because if things do not go well, the memories will be tainted. Think of Roma, Voeller and Conti and you will realise that appointing legends as coaches inevitably destroys the fantasy and many a fond memory.
