He was up 5-3 in the second though? 30 or 40-0 as well i think
He was down a break and 2-3 in second set when the first rain break came. Play resumed after like 30 minutes and he immediately broke Schwartzman and subsequent games to lead 5-3 before it was cancelled for the day. After that, the result was never in doubt. He also struggled a bit against Bolelli in the first round, despite winning in straight sets. Dangerously close to losing a set, but he still won all the decisive points. His clutchness sets him apart from the rest.

Thiem is the only one who can do it until Djokovic comes back, if he does, unless one of the youngsters steps up. Problem is Thiem can outhit Nadal for one or two sets, but over five sets Thiem just isn't good enough.
His one-handed backhand is too much of a mismatch for Nadal's forehand topspin on clay court, especially the French Open. Over 5 sets, Nadal will exploit this advantage as we used to see with Federer in the old times. Thiem is already the second best clay courter right now, but no matter how much he improves, facing Nadal is only going to be an uphill task for him.

I think its hard to say if rain will ever help a player over the other. Chances are Nadal was gonna get the break back, the gap between him and all the other players in the world is just too big.

I agree, I think Nadal would have won without the rain, and he's the deserving champion. I was just being snarky.

I always thought Nadal and Federer are on another level than everyone over the last 10-15 years. Its always surprising to me when someone is able to get a win against them on any surface, even if they seem to do worse on other surface than their fav ones. Injuries, movement & off-field issues may have a lot to do with that though.

I do agree if you excluded federer from the rest of the players also djoko in his prime was on their level.
Also i do think zverev will be a regular challanger starting from next season.

I disagree about the backhand, I don't think it's a particular weakness like it was for Federer. Thiem's backhand looks more like Wawrinka's, which does fine against topspin. Especially on clay, when he has time to back up and hit it.

Thiem's problem is that his only strategy is to hit harder and harder.

Fed only got back to this level in 2017. Before that he was very much beatable. And Nadal on grass is very average compared to other surfaces.

He kept getting pushed back on his backhand side, though, that let Nadal dictate most of the point on longer rallies. He could try to hit earlier, but he'd make even more UE that way.
I agree about the strategy part. He seems to have the weapon and physical fitness to backup, but always fell short due to lack of correct approach.

We are very lucky to witness Federer, Nadal and Djokovic in the same era. I don't like Nadal's playing style at all, seems very robot-esque for my liking, but he's also an elite tennis player no matter what.

Zverev and Tsitsipas show us that there might be a very bright future in the sport.

I remember watching Federer play back in some Switzerland tournament I was going to in 2000, 2001 and 2002. He was quite unknown back then of course. Didn't expect to see him lift off, he actually lost rather early on everytime I watched him :D

I don't want Nadal to win because I want Roger to hold the Grand Slam record
But I also don't want that Milanista Djokovic to win

it seems like djokovic is going to win this one. 2-0 and he's leading in the third set as well (3-2 in this moment).

I didn't expect it to be so unbalanced. I mean, djokovic's has always been great in Australia but Nadal was his bitch today.

I am sure there have there straight sets win amongst all 3 of them, but Djokovic today prob played the best final i have seen ever. Walk in the park. Nadal never did well in Australia though.

Djokovic gonna get a non-calendar slam? Or will Nadal just do his normal thing on Clay?

Federer vs Nadal in Paris i have been waiting for some time to see this again.
Even though it looks like federer is gonna loose and the conditions are not perfect(wind) it has been great so far.

Maybe the last time we see those two face of in paris.
