BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE
An old friend of White fans, Fabio Capello, who led Real Madrid to the 1997 League title, is returning to the Spanish capital. He is a coach who has achieved success with every team he has managed, and who already has 8 League titles and one European Cup under his belt. In love with Spain and Real Madrid, Capello has returned to restore glory to his team. Fabio Capello -born in Pieris, Italy on 18/06/1946- made his player debut in 1964 with Sociedad Polideportiva de Artes y Labores de Ferrara, also known as Spal Ferrara. Three years later, he signed with Rome, where he won his first title as a player, the Italian Cup. His great performances for the Italian capital's team led him to sign with Juventus, where he became a fundamental part of the Club. He later was selected to play for the Italian national team. His most climactic moment with the Azurra came when he scored in Wembley Stadium, giving Italy their first ever win over the English. With 32 caps, he retired in 1980 while playing for Milan.
Capello began his successful coaching career in the early 1990's with Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi's Milan team that won four League titles and a European Championship. He led his men to a record 58 straight Calcio matches without a loss, from 19 May 1991 to 21 March 1993, including an entire season without losing one match. He had already managed the Rossonera side during the last five matches of the 1987 Calcio.
With his own style of coaching, Capello reached one of the pinnacles of his career in 1994, when his Milan defeated Barcelona 4-0 in the European Cup final. He then moved to Madrid to lead the Whites in the revolutionary 1996/97 season that ended with a Spanish League title. Along with Fabio came players of the likes of Mijatovic, Suker, Seedorf, Roberto Carlos, Illgner, and Panucci, the foundation of the team that would conquer the Club's longed-for Seventh European Cup, 32 years after fruitless attempts.
After a brief, unsuccessful second stint as Milan manager, Fabio Capello landed at Roma, one of the Italian Clubc with the largest fan-base, but with a short list of titles. It was the Italian boss who led the team from the Italian capital to win the Scudetto in 2001, the third in Club history, and the first since 1983.
He took on another adventure with yet another great Italian team, Juventus, where he won another two Scudettos in 2005 and 2006. With these last two titles, Capello became the first coach to win the Italian League with three different teams. The Pieris native has achieved the milestone of winning a League title with every team he has managed, a feat almost impossible of equaling.
‘Sir Fabio’ returns to Real Madrid to do what he did 10 years ago, win titles. Despite only staying one year in the Spanish capital, he fell in love with the city and a team that he has been a fan of since he left. He will rejoin some old friends, like Pedja Mijatovic, Raúl, and Guti, who he coached in 1996/97.
