We owe this win to Toninu who sacrificed his name to Sassoulo in order to break the curse and set us free.

You'll always be remembered my friend as a Nerazzurri champion.

Forza Toninu!

Now we need another champion to change his name to juve. I'm looking at you Browha.

I'm glad we won, because it was classic trap match which we used to fail in recent years:
-away game
-against Sassuolo, our most demanding opponent in Serie A (lol, that's true)
-12:30 PM, Sunday
-after international break
-before Champions League match
-after two defeats in the row
Moreover, Sassuolo players were motivated after Squinzi's death, so I can forget about last 20 minutes and enjoy the result.

As much as I wished we raped them 6-1, I'll take this win wholeheartedly. Sassuolo is after rube our most serious opponent, we probably beat everyone else at least once but them previous two seasons.

The first hour or so was quite convincing. We played with purpose and looked in control, completely shutting Sassuolo off if not for a couple of counter-attacks that stemmed from careless passes on our side (one of which, unfortunately, led to their equaliser). Then, when we got the fourth, we committed the same mistake Atalanta did yesterday and turned our mind to the upcoming CL game, sitting back and letting the neroverdi crawl back into the game. Problem is when you pull the plug mentally, it's hard to get your focus back. Sassuolo kept gathering momentum, whereas we panicked, losing shape and confidence. Thankfully, we somehow managed to see this game through, but we better learn from today's lesson if we don't want to get burned later on in the season.

The forwards' performances were the best note of the game. Lautaro was brilliant, easily the MotM, even though he could have been a bit more clinical in front of goal. Anyway, he's stepped up his game significantly this season and is on his way to fulfill his potential. Lukaku was very involved, battling with defenders and creating spaces with his movements. Yes, he misspassed the ball at times and his touch is not always "educated", but he did mostly well. Their chemistry is definitely improving. Politano's presence was hardly noticeable, but that was mostly due to the team being unable to get the ball out of our own half.

The midfield did well until the 4-1. Brozovic led the show for the first hour, switching play and dictating the tempo with his usual mastery. Barella was off to a quiet start but progressively grew into the game, whereas Gagliardini looked a bit too static and uninvolved for my taste, although he wasn't bad in general. Of course, all the above refers to the first 70 minutes of play, before we lost the plot completely and let Sassuolo walk over us. I'm not sure Vecino ever got to touch the ball, which makes today's his best performance of the season so far.

Candreva candreva-ed down the right with his usual mix of good things and the occasional brainfart(s), whereas Biraghi's performance was generally good with the exception of a couple of suicidal passes that let to Sassuolo's counter-attacks. Lazaro's Serie A debut was uglier than his pineapple-shaped haircut. Thankfully we didn't drop points and, with time, people will forget about this shitshow. He needs to wake the fuck up, though, and soon.

The defence did all right until we pulled the plug. Then Sassuolo's attack had it too easy, being able to charge forward in numbers, and with little to no protection from our midfield our back three started to shake.

As for Conte, he prepared the game well but made the same mistake Gasperini did (turning his mind to the Borussia game too early) and almost paid the same price. Bene, ma non benissimo, as we would say over here (= well, but not very well). Anyway, this one's gone. We finally got to beat our bogeyteam again. Let's take what worked today and try to learn from what didn't.

Can't trust these bench fuckers at all, and we need pure dm in january, I think a lot of these goals could have been preventable if we had someone like kante or torreira.

EXACTLY!!! Agree 100%! We need more covent of D-line! Hope Marotta wakes up and bring someone like Kante, Torreira or maybe Tonali?

and in order to achieve this we had to hire a 10 mln/year earning coach, spend around 150 mln in trasnfers and have their president passed away :palm:

I watched the game over again and tbh after we conceded the 3rd goal we actually defended solidly until the final whistle, the only lapse being the Berardi shot that deflected off his own player.

Here are my thoughts from last night's game.

I loved how we came out to play football last night. With the one minute silence and tribute to their former owner, the stage was set from the very beginning of the game for Sassoulo to play with pride and overrun us. But we were hungry and switched on from the very beginning of the match. For me, that was huge. I have watched so many games over the years where Inter started timidly and made early mistakes and it was obvious the players had not been mentally prepared to play.

I am not sure about how other posters on here might feel but Martinez is really coming into his game and has the making of something special. I am not saying that he is the finished product or that he plays perfectly because there are aspects of his game that he needs to work on but the guy is pretty special. There was an occasion that he was running at the defence, cut the other way and went past his defender and I could not help but watch in awe. There was a change of pace that I did not expect and I was quite surprised. For me, the positives are that he is only in his second season at Inter and he is only 22 years old and yet he is really coming along. Perhaps the best part is that there is a lot of room for growth and development. While he was on the field, Sassuolo's defence really struggled to come to terms with him. When he was replaced by Politano, we lost all impetus up front.

There were a number of exchanges between Lukaku and Martinez that in my opinion, were simply beautiful. They took place closer to the half-way line and allowed us to break forward. This might sound really corny, but those moves took my breath away. To see us attacking in that manner was quite special given that over the years, we have only managed to cross to Icardi in the hope that he would score. There were also some passes through the middle which totally blew me away because in the past, we only attacked down the flanks. The passes were not eye catching defence splitting passes. They were simply played to feet in the hope that Lukaku or Martinez could make something out it. But I loved seeing that kind of build-up play and dynamism.

In relation to Lukaku, it is evident that there are times when moves break down because of his first touch or a bad pass. I understand and acknowledge that is a problem for us and cannot help but think that against higher calibre opponents, we would inevitably suffer due to possible missed chances and turnovers. However, to only focus on that and say that is all he adds to our game would be wrong. Some of his link up passes were really nice and he genuinely plays for the team. In the last 15 minutes of the game when we were under alot of strain, he was back there helping. With Lukaku, it is not always pretty or smart (for example his penalty or the push that led to Martinez's second being ruled out) but he is effective and I like having a player in the team that thinks of his teammates rather than feeling that he is the center of the universe.

A special mention should go to Candreva and Bastoni. In relation to the former, he is almost unrecognisable from the player that played under Spalletti. I never thought I would write this but I was glad that he started yesterday. He plays tough and his defensive interventions in terms of chasing back and tackling were much needed. It is no coincidence that we conceded as soon as Candreva was substituted. A replay straight after we conceded showed Lazaro rushed to advance and was too much in front of the play to the extent that he was caught out of position. Personally, I feel Lazaro is shit. He does not inspire confidence and from the time he took to the field I felt anxious and wished Candreva had stayed on. There is something Dalbertesque about him. I guess only time will tell.

In relation to Bastoni, he plays with composure, confidence and certainty way beyond his years. I was surprised he started and feel there was a lot to like about his performance last night. Personally, I feel our defensive issues last night stemmed from the left and the space that Biraghi granted Berardi rather than through the presence of Bastoni and balls being played through the middle.

Lastly, I just want to mention Gagliardini. He was by no means our most visible player but that does not mean that he did not contribute or that he was non-existent. He played a solid game in the engine room and there were numerous occasions when we were playing out from the back when he was in the thick of the battle helping his teammates. I am hoping that if a choice has to be made between Vecino and Gagliardini, that Inter will elect to keep Gagliardini.

The only other thought I have is that we are far from the finished product and there are aspects to our game that need work. But more than anything, what I am loving right now is the effort, the mental preparedness, the different aspects of our game and the way the players are all contributing to the team.
