I mean, sure. Good for you real football fans. Maybe if WC host bids weren't decided by bribes and European tournaments weren't watered down by letting everyone with a pulse qualify I would be more into it.
Strong win for Canada over the U.S. on Tuesday though. First time in 25 years.
Pretty much this.
As someone who always preferred these tournaments over heavily marketed competitions like the CL (in the past 11 years in particular which coincidentally was also the moment it also became watered down), I feel that corruption has ruined them.
The last World Cup I really enjoyed was the 1998 one despite not liking its final. And that also was a corrupt case where Platini meddled a lot and helped France.
I still have buzzing in my ears from the 2010 World Cup but I can honestly say I prefer that to whatever club football of the 2010s except South American.
And honestly, same goes for 2014 and 2018. But it's getting worse as things move on. Profit maximization in sports usually means you have to ruin the quality.
The last Euro I loved as a neutral observer was 2000. In 2004 I surely got too much joy but honestly it was underwhelming given how everyone important just failed.
The Euro was my favorite competition and now I barely care about it.
The World Cup is going to turn to shit with 48 teams.
And as much as I could say that in principle I would prefer more international football, the way Uefa and Fifa are handling it is too stupid and it is killing the sport. You cannot stop club football every 2-3 weeks for some meaningless games. If they wanted a "Nations League" then they should just do that. A league. 4 tiers or whatever with 10-12 teams, they play each other 4 times during the season and 8 times during the off season and then have the full table every 2 years.
Now everyone wants a "Nations League" because it's a money grabbing event with so called promotions and relegations. Who even cares? Ah yes, the shittier you are the more chances you have to play in the Euro! That's who cares!
