From Michael's site former referee Bergonzi: “The penalty of Asamoah? It was not for VAR to decide. It was not a clear mistake and so the VAR protocol was cleared. The referee (Mariani) decided to not give Inter the penalty.”

So referees are allowed to make "small mistakes"? Sounds super fishy to me, doesn't this defeat the purpose of VAR? Is a match altering non-call a "small mistake"?? :yuno:

I'm pretty sure that's not how it worked in the World Cup.

Guys think about who we had on the bench and think about several other factors like the refereeing and the pitch, if we scored a penalty the game would've been different.

We had Vrsaljko, Perisic, Skriniar and Nainggolan all on the bench.

Well, in nainggolan's case more like eyeing girls' butts, which is fine by the way

Teams should have one or two VAR calls a match they make if and when they see fit, like stoppages in volleyball.

It's still the ref's decision, so if the ref is stubborn or corrupt as fuck, he won't care what the video shows. The rest of the world is already seeing the replay.

Yeah but that's effectively solving all those "why wasn't VAR used" situations that occur once or twice a match.

If the referee goes and gets the decision wrong it's a different discussion then - at least you'll be sure he was given the replay to look at and then he basically deliberately fucked you over.

He's talking about it being clearly a penalty versus a more ambiguous call. An ambiguous call is different from a "small mistake" because the former could be decided differently by different referees, whereas the latter implies a clearly wrong call that is insignificant to the flow of the game. I think you are conflating the two. I know we're all biased, but that penalty call was close, and it's not clear that the referee made a mistake in disallowing it. In those cases, the referee's decision stands--even though it's inconsistent with an earlier call. That might not make a difference now, but it's important to understand when VAR is supposed to be brought in.

I think that was the way it was supposed to work at the WC (clear and obvious error), but VAR ended up being used for a lot of marginal calls (e.g. Perisic handball in the final). So the implementation of it was incorrect.

All the Atalanta players and Gasp also bitching about the pitch. How is it so hard to get grass right?
