FACCHETTI: "CONFIDENT FOR ITALY"
Wednesday, 21 June 2006 17:17:55
MILAN - Ninety-four appearances for Italy, seventy as captain, a European Championship winner in 1968 and a World Cup runner-up in 1970. An ambassador of Italian football who is highly respected by FIFA and UEFA, Giacinto Facchetti is closely following the World Cup in Germany.
"It has never been downhill for Italy at World Cups," said the Inter president ahead of the Azzurri's decisive match against Czech Republic. "I remember my 'Mexico', Spain '82, USA '94, all tournaments in which we were protagonists right until the end, and we always had problems in the early rounds. The only time we started off well was in Argentina in 1978, but that was probably the only time we didn't start as one of the favourites.
"This Italy side shouldn't have any doubts over their qualities. I saw them against Ghana and applauded the team's performance, not just the victory. It was a tough match against the United States, one of those matches you get at a World Cup, but ninety minutes can never change the absolute value of a team. Italy have been one of the four best teams in the world for forty years, but sometimes they just feel the pressure too much and make life a bit difficult for themselves. But I'm confident: we can get through the round.
"Tomorrow we will have to be proud and have the necessary desire and calm against the Czech Republic. Our players should have no doubts over what attitude to have on the pitch from the first to last minute, and this is the most important aspect: the team must be united. Our players just have to think about all the fans in Italy and the world over who will be cheering on the Azzurri."
--------------------------------------------------------
I guess Facchetti's a zombie, or just had to come back from the dead to say these very important words. Imo, I don't even think it's true he's sick. I bet the Milan fans are laughing they're asses off, taking a rumor they probably started so seriously.
