Sunderland set to lose Alvarez case to Inter, will have to pay €10.5m

It looks like Sunderland are going to have to splash out before the January window even opens.

It appears that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (based in Lausanne) is going to back the Nerazzurri in the Ricky Alvarez. This has been recently confirmed by the Sunderland Echo.

Alvarez moved to Sunderland in the 2014/2015 season on loan, knowing that if the Black Cats weren’t relegated, they’d be on the hook for his €10.5 million buyout option.

Though Sunderland stayed up, they duly refused to pay up, claiming that Inter had violated the contract by selling them an injured player.

This didn’t go down well with Inter, who took the Black Cats to court, and look set to win their case. Alvarez has, in fact, been in fine shape since returning to Italy, where he has regularly turned out for Sampdoria.

The CAS has now set the date of the hearing for December 9th, and it looks like Sunderland will finally be made to splash out.
