I would speculate that neither Inter nor Sunderland paid his salary in the last few months, as each team claimed that the player belonged to the other. No payment for this amount of time would most certainly constitute a just cause (as mentioned in FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players) for Alvarez to declare himself free of his existing contract.
