Rafa Benitez's reign as Newcastle manager ended in defeat as Shinji Okazaki's acrobatic bicycle kick secured a 1-0 victory for Premier League leaders Leicester City...

Wikipedia:

His calm demeanour and tactical changes at half time of the 2005 European cup final were said to give players belief they could battle back from 3–0 down, although he had to correct his plans when it was pointed out to him his new formation would require 12 players on the pitch.

Incredible how I'm actually starting to respect this guy more than Mancini. At least Fat Ben had the honor & dignity to resign when his transfer demands were not met. Unlike a certain delusional whiner who just bitch and moan and groan.

Not many people would give up the pay check, you know.

He was definitely sacked, and I'm too lazy to search through the thread but I'm certain there was a multi million euro buyout involved.

well, yeah, thats true of any coach we sack... if we sign a contract for, say, 3 years, we either pay them the full 3 years salary as the time comes (and they're still under contract to us), or they agree to break the contract generally for some compensation. Nothing remarkable about that at all, every coach who has been sacked ever had the legal right to claim a payout (pretty much)

yes - i'm aware how contracts work

it was more a response to the "he had the dignity and honor to resign" comment

I see. Yes, he was basically sacked. It may have been mutual, but it wasnt a resignation (that involves no payout from the club, thats why football coaches so rarely resign)

Oh, but Benitez is the master of getting the payout.

He will get payout and is free to go when Newcastle is relegated, or something like that as I have heard (I haven't confirmed that myself, can't be bothered for someone like him).

Went to Madrid for 6 months, another pay out.

He's just really good at getting clubs, even a club like Madrid to go for him.
