Due to the injury I didn't manage to see him play at Galata last year but he managed to play 15 games before he got injured.

Did you see him in Turkey?

Benfica-Sporting today, it´s the first big game on our league

My prevision on the teams:

Benfica:

--------Júlio César
Maxi----Luisão--Jardel---Eliseu
---------Samaris --Enzo
Salvio--------------------Gaitan
----------Talisca
---------------Lima

Sporting:

--------Rui Patrício
Esgaio--Sarr---Maurício---Jefferson
-------------W. Carvalho
--------A. Martins-----Adrien
Nani---------Slimani-----Carrillo

Benfica are the favorites especially playing at home, Sporting has the advantage of having almost the same team as last season apart from Sarr instead of Rojo and Nani who is new on the team but who´s also used to the team and the league.

Nonetheless this Sporting side is nothing special in my eyes, the only players that are consistent are W. Carvalho, Slimani and Nani who also can decide a game if his on his days.

Benfica is a worse team this season comparing to the previous season, the defense is pretty pathetic in my eyes, the only good player is Luisão, but they have good options as always on the attack.

This game may also be the one where Júlio César makes his debut, it´s not certain though, Samaris will also have his first game.
On the other side may be Enzo, W. Carvalho and Slimani who are still to this point very heavily rumored to leave.

What do you think of Sporting's new manager?

He´s the most promising young manager we have the guy was really good with Estoril, had a great first season on the league and lost 5/6 instrumental first team players, next season despite that made another terrific season.
He stole some important points against the big teams in the country and show great value, he was heavily linked with Porto Benfica and Sporting at some point.
He´s the kind of coach that has a close relation with the players, loves an attacking formation but who also has a secondary formation or a modification of the primary formation for the games when you have to defend, it was using this approach that he manage to win at Dragão, it was our first defeat at home after... 81 matches!

Story time:

When Porto decided to let Vítor Pereira go the job position was between him and Paulo Fonseca who had the best season ever with Paços, we ended up going for Paulo Fonseca, oh how good that worked looking back...
When Paulo Fonseca asked to be released we tried to get him again, rumours said he refused because he didn´t wanted to coach a team who was on their knees at the moment and wanted to stay with Estoril until the end of the season so that he could chose between any of the top 3 teams (Porto was without a coach, Jardim from Sporting was rumour to already have agreed to leave and Jesus was almost certain to leave too).

IMO he was expecting to chose between Porto and Benfica but that backfired for him.
Porto wasn´t happy with him refusing the offer and publicly said that there was nothing true about the offer and that neither now nor the next season he would coach the team.
Jesus ended up staying in command of Benfica.
That left him with Sporting, which is good for him anyway, but I´m sure as hell that he ended up kicking himself in the ass for being too greedy.

___________

Highlights from yesterdays match

Benfica 1 Sporting 1

I can´t go into a lot of detail because I was on the stadium watching Porto (3) vs Moreirense (0) and lost the game.

The general opinion is that Benfica was the better team but that ridiculous meltdown by Artur (Jesus benched Júlio César, great option) made Benfica less confidant on the defense and Sporting had their chances too.

In the end the game could have gone either way both teams had good chances to score but that would have been too harsh for Benfica.

I watched the game when I was waiting for other games. That goalkeeper's mistake was fucked up, but okay, he could've saved it if he didn't slip

Now that the market is closed (well for most countries) I´ll try to write my views on the teams for this season.

I´ll edit this post probably during the weekend.

For now I´ll make what I believe will be the best 11 just for fun.

-------------Rui Patrício
Cédric-----Luisão---Maicon--- A. Sandro
--------------W. Carvalho
--------Brahimi---------Enzo
Salvio-------- Jackson ------ Gaitan

Gaitan <3

hopefully he'll make it into the bigger leagues one day. Maybe he's not as good as my other football crush, David Silva, but he's good

Sporting (9pts) - Porto (11pts) today

My prevision on the teams:

Sporting:

-------------Rui Patrício
Cédric--Sarr---Maurício---Jefferson
-------------W. Carvalho
--------J. Mário-----Adrien
Nani---------Slimani-----Carrillo

Porto:

------------Fabiano
Danilo--Marcano---Indi---A. Sandro
-------------Casemiro
--------R. Neves-----Herrera
Óliver---------Jackson-----Brahimi

It will be an exciting game, both teams had some unexpected draws against minor teams, Porto drew their last 2 matches so both teams need to win to avoid seeing Benfica gaining a very good early lead on the league.

Sporting plays at home and that´s always a big advantage in games like this, on the other hand Porto has a much better team (not saying this because I´m a portista, it´s my actual opinion).

This game may mean the return of Oliver to the team after 3 weeks out injured, I like the guy, a lot, but not on the wing and I´m not too excited when we play with this midfield and both Oliver and Brahimi as wingers, the explanation is simple. First off I don´t like Casemiro, I think aside from when the game gets physical he´s only average such a huge difference from when Fernando played there. Herrera keeps on being the Herrera from last season, run run run run run run and that´s pretty much it, he´s no good on a short passing game we play I guess it´s obvious to everyone by now, R. Neves is a huge surprise just 17 and he has been doing very good so far, but it´s still very far from a finished product. This trio is very similar (Casemiro and Herrera are good physically but not so much on the positioning and passing) R. Neves is a much technical player and a good passer but it´s better playing from behind. That makes the midfield very concentrated on the defense, it lacks that offensive option that Oliver could fill IMO, a guy who could move the ball forward with his vison and passing and offensive projection.

Now on the wings, Oliver naturally has a tendency to cut to the inside all the time both when the team is without the ball and when we are attacking, that leads to space for the full back to attack even though it reinforces our center midfield, it leaves the team dispositioned.
Brahimi also has the tendency to cut to the center which leads to a us not having the game open enough as usual.

Sporting defense is very weak, particularly the CBs, the full backs are good offensively but the can´t defend well enough, this can be where we may decide the game.
Porto defense isn´t great either, specially with Marcano (who only played 1 game for us) and Indi who´s a new player on the club, the never played together, so there´s always an uncertainty by itself. Danilo and A. Sandro are also much better on the attack they will face both Carillo and Nani who are very fast and skilled players with Slimani up front there´s when they are stronger. A. Sandro was injured and only played like 3 games so far that also a bad sign.

Keep an eye on João Mário if you see the game, this guy is only starting to appear and I do like him.

Well, lets see how this goes.

__________

Quaresma will play instead of Óliver, :yao:
I know it´s the guy birthday but it´s a HUGE gamble, oh well let´s hope he´s inspired because if he´s not I´m seeing him being sent off, this new coach benches him a lot.

71% of Record readers vote Manchester United’s Nani as the ‘best player in Portugal’

B1MtUfqCAAAWVG6.jpg

“Is Nani the best player in the Portuguese league?” Yes, according to a poll from Portuguese newspaper Record, where the Manchester United winger gathered a 71% vote in his favor.

On loan at Sporting currently, Nani has 5 goals and 2 assists in the 1022 minutes he has played so far.

Almost 65% of the readers believe that Sporting are firm favorites to clinch the title this season with Nani in red hot form.

Quite a feat to achieve as the Portuguese league consists of amazing players such as Bahrimi, Quaresma, Slimani, Tello, Casemiro, Danilo, Alex Sandro, Gaitan, Jackson Martinez, Aboubakar, Luisao, Enzo Perez etc.

Good to see Nani doing well.

If Quaresma, being the boss he is (lol) didn't win the player of the league award because of Nani, he should retire.

Porto Benfica tonight guys!

Benfica is up front with +3 pts and has been more consistent on the league, Porto on the other hand have been better in the CL and IMO have a better team, but only by now have figured out the 1st eleven.

It will be a close call, and for me the wingers are going to solve the match. Gaitan and Salvio form the better duo but Tello and Brahimi are so much faster then the full backs from Benfica.

Keep an eye for Talisca and Enzo as well, for Porto Jackson has been having his best season so far, and Herrera finally has been playing at the WC level he showed.
Danilo despite all the bad stuff I've been writing about him suddenly decided to start playing football and how well has he played, curiously his better form is on the same time that A. Sandro started to decline, it's like both roles have reversed.

Quintero should start on the bench putting Oliver who is more consistent defensively and tactically. I like him a lot, too bad he only came on loan.

I'll be in the stadium hopefully to see another win for the blues!

Well, fuck...

Porto 0 - Benfica 2

Benfica is now 6 points ahead and being outside of the european competitions has pretty the league in the bag.

It was an uncharacteristic game, Benfica usually a very offensive side sit back most of the game only attacking occasionally from their fastest players, Salvio, talisca, but mainly Gaitan who played on the wing but more as a free role as usual.

Porto started very strong and managed to create several dangerous attacks from the wings like I predicted before, Herrera missed one sitter, Júlio César made a fantastic save for a Jackson Martinez strike and Jackson as well on a dangerous cross by Tello (iirc) was very close to reach the ball to what have been a almost sure goal.

The game appeared to go according to plan but like usual in football if you don´t score...

Benfica scored on their 1st shot, with yet another defensive meltdown from Porto, they scored from... a throw in. Just a ridiculous way to concede.

http://gfycat.com/AccurateTeemingKittiwake

The first half ended without much more to add.

Fans were skeptical but confident that if the team continued to produce what they have that´d eventually score.

The 2nd half comes and Benfica scores almost in the beginning, 2 chances 2 goals, well, shit.

The next minutes Benfica took the upper hand, Porto players took the goal pretty hard.

Then Lopetegui decided to put Quintero for Herrera (who had a terrible game) and Quaresma for Tello (Brahimi should have been off instead) and the team became much more balanced for the attack, Quaresma entered pretty well and created 2/3 good chances.

Until the end of the game we hit the cross bar twice and had one disallowed goal (right call), Benfica also created one big chance
on a counter attack cleared just at the right time by A. Sandro when Porto was desperately trying to score.

It was on of those games you know, it sucks, Benfica came to defend ad play an aggressive football, 26 fouls, and with only 5 shots scored twice.

Fair play to them though, they were more mature during the game and made the best of their chances, now it´s their title to lose.

I´ll add some pics when I get home from work.
