Osvaldo: Living like a rockstar…

Osvaldo-hat-epa_0.jpg

Italy striker-turned-rock musician Dani Osvaldo says “I like to drink whiskey, smoke a cigarette and do rock and roll, but only whenever I can.”

Osvaldo retired from football last year at the age of just 30 to focus on his music career, and the former Roma, Inter, Juventus and Southampton attacker gave an insight into his new life behind the microphone.

“Retiring from football? I won a little [with that decision], I think,” he told Pagina 12.

“I wanted to do it and I’ve done it. I have no regrets and I’m happy with my decision.

“The football world prejudices you a lot, as does this country. There’s always someone behind you, but I learned that it didn’t affect me.

“It wasn’t easy for me when I was in the spotlight, and I used to get annoyed when people said things about me that weren’t true, but I learned to deal with the imagination of people.

“It happened to me here in my country, where I was happy, fulfilling a dream, that I wasn’t professional.

“It went like this: ‘Uh, this guy likes rock and roll, so he must like whiskey, and on top of that he smokes. He must be drinking whiskey until 5 in the morning, and I’m sure that he takes drugs, too.’

“I have to say to them, ‘no, dude.’ I played 11 years in Europe, Italy and for Juventus. Do you think that if I take drugs, smoke 50 cigarettes or drink whiskey until 5 in the morning, I could play in those places?

“No, brother, I’m not Messi. I wouldn’t have been to get out of bed if I did all that.
I still have to go to bed early, eat salad and rest well...

“Afterwards, of course I like to drink whiskey, smoke a cigarette and do rock and roll, but only whenever I can. I don’t do that every day.”

--- so he basically snitched on Messi? :D

It's actually a compliment saying that Messi is a natural talent whereas he's not. And lots of these natural talents until the mid 2000s rarely cared about being healthy or training so there's a precedent let's say.

Yeah, Ronaldo was apparently pretty sure that Vieri once said that a hungover Ronaldo would come to training then do amazing things on the pitch. Probably that's why he was so injury prone and how Messi had more longevity.

‘Football? I prefer beer and BBQ…’
By Football Italia staff

Dani Osvaldo reveals he left football because “I prefer beer and barbecue to money”.

The former Juventus, Roma and Southampton striker retired from football to pursue a career in rock & roll, and he insists he has no regrets.

“I decided to quit at Boca, there was too much gossip,” Osvaldo recalled, speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I couldn’t go out, I was afraid of people. I couldn’t do it anymore. I had offers from China and clubs in the Champions League, but I was detached.

“I was beginning to hate what I had always loved. Football deserves respect, and I prefer asado [Argentinian barbecue] and beer to money.

“Do you want a laugh? In December 2016 [Jorge] Sampaoli contacted me, he was at Sevilla at the time.

“He said to me: ‘Dani, I’m not asking anything of you, you can do what you want on the pitch and off, but I need a striker’.

“I told him ‘but boss, there’s the Cosquín Rock festival!’. He said ‘I forgot! Go, of course, you can’t miss it’. Two crazy people!

“Do I miss Italy? I’ll be back after the winter, I don’t remember the Bergamo snow fondly.

“And football? I’ve played in important shirts and with great champions. At the time you don’t realise it, you take it for granted.

“Today I understand that fortune, but I don’t miss it. Believe me.”

Osvaldo famously left Inter after a clash with Roberto Mancini, and that is something he regrets.

“I threw a punch at him after that famous Juve-Inter game - ‘Do you want a fight?’. He said: ‘Don’t tell me that in front of everyone’.

“If he hadn’t expelled me he’d have lost authority. Then I went to his office crying, I was ashamed. He’s a great Coach with a good character.”

 back at it again

Osvaldo to return to football

Former Roma, Inter and Juventus striker Dani Osvaldo will reportedly return to football, two years after retiring to focus on rock & roll.

The forward hasn’t played since being released by Boca Juniors in January 2016, and he turned down a move to Chievo that summer to focus on his music.

However, TyC Sports is now reporting that he’ll return to action in the Argentine third division, for Talleres de Rimedios de Escalada.

Osvaldo has been training with the club already, and has taken part in some friendly matches.

He’s expected to be available in March.

Osvaldo was capped 14 times by Italy, qualifying through his great-grandfather, and he scored four goals against Bulgaria, Armenia and Denmark.

He spent most of his career in Serie A, playing for Atalanta, Lecce, Fiorentina, Bologna, Roma, Juventus and Inter.

Bring him in and give him the captain armband.

That should teach Icardi a lesson.

I loved Osvaldo. To this day he's the only striker who has showed any semblance of ability to play next to Icardi. Understood his job, and the two complimented each other well. Who knows what would have happened if he didn't lose it on Nagatomo after he failed to pass him the ball.
