Canna is gone, the leader of our central-defence has left the building. So what now.

We have Cordoba. Well, nobody can complain about him. Year after year he dig himself deeper and deeper to our Nerazurri-hearts. Just a lovable guy.

Then we have Matrix. He has been three years with us and proven his worth. Anybody can remember the legendary dynamic duo he created with Cafe in his first season. But is there a big question mark around him now? Last season wasn´t the best possible and a little hesitance has been with him in pre-season matches also. He has never done very well in national team and his temper has cost us couple of times before. Is he a player we can rely on for the whole season?
Matrix is a man I personally respect a lot and love that he´s with us, but somehow the feeling that he should be a regural in a starting eleven is a bit unsure. I might be wrong about this, but still...

Back-ups are Camarra and Miha. Nothing to complain about, as long as they really are pure back-ups. For that they are good enough fo sure.

But then there is a player they talk about as a new Samuel. Young lad from South America who has came here to learn how to play football in high level. Young lad who came here to sit on the bench and learn from the masters. Back-up for real Serie A defenders. And how young is this kid then? 23. Yes, 23! It´s not so freaking little. Samuel was 22 when he played his first whole season with Roma.

So what do we actually have?? We have an Argentine NT-defender who will most probably have a marvellous future ahead of him. A solid, versatile player, who can play anywhere in the defence. Guy who really knows how to win. Nothing but overflowing praise from everyone who talks anything about him.

Don´t you guys think we should start hoping a little more from him than a place on the bench and a quality replacement for others. I mean, this is a huge chance for Nicolas. Canna´s gone, so there is nobody (or hopefully Cafe), who can be absolutely sure of his place in our central defense.

Burdisso is slightly injured at the moment and has not yet played for Inter, but what I feel right now is that our number one CB-pair in this season will be Cafe-Burdisso. What do you think..?

I agree. Like I have said erlier, I don't trus Matrix enaugh to be a regular starter. And in my opinion Burdisso are much better football player then Matrix ever have been. So of cause I think Burdisso should start alongside Cordoba when he have recorved from his injury.

Matrix should be our first choise sub....Let's face the facts he is not near as good as he was a couple of seasons ago as you pointet out.

And you say that the leader of our defence have left I don't agree on that, he never became the leader on our team that he should have been. He never really lived up to his potential when he was with us. So maybe it's good that he leaved us after all...Then it all make sence that we braught in Burdisso one worldclass player out one potential in.

What I´m saying is that Canna was a top figure of our centrebacks. No doupt about that. NT-captain and a hell of reputation, everything just didn´t work how was expected

I think that Burdisso has the potential to be a first team starter - but in his first season,Mancio will probably only use him sparingly.

I've seen enough of Burdisso to be convinced that he can become the number 1 CB at the club and definately have a starting position. This guy is simply phenomenal. He is definatley the future, and how I see things, the future is now.

I'm hoping that Cordoba-----Burdisso becomes the main centerpiece of our backline.

If Burdisso is really as good as you say, the Cannavaro transfer is far less dramatic than I thought.

I'm sorry to say it, but I just don't trust Matrix. He makes far too many mistakes and against the big clubs he usually comes away looking like an idiot. No matter how inexperienced Burdisso is I would like to see a Cordoba-Burdisso CB partnership this season.

Me too , I was very shocked of Canna's departure but i would be relieved if Burdisso came out to be the New Samuel as the say in Argentina . Not noly this but this means that we wouldn't have pain and headache on the bench as Matrix , Gamarra and Sinisa would be ok for them not Canna as he damands fame and starting line-up place even if he is injured .

Cafe - Burdisso would be the ideal partnership .

Materazzi, world class? We might be pushing ourselves a bit here. He’s definitely a great player (It’s just some childish antics that let him down, like punching ex-Inter defender Cirillo, and exaggerating injuries during game play on a few occasions, as well as being a gamble on the international scene) His performances so far in his Inter career have been consistent as far as I am concerned, but will he be remembered as one of the great defenders in Football history? Highly unlikely, but I am sure he has done enough to earn him a place as one of the great defenders that have graced Serie.

Now let’s get back to the interesting topic at hand. We all agree that Cordoba’s position as first choice centre back is secured, but it’s a question of who to partner him with? Madman Materazzi? Reliable Gamarra? Young Burdisso? Or is it Old Miha? There is a lot to consider first, age, height, experience etc...So let’s get busy! :flirt:

1st Candidate
Name: - Marco Materazzi
Nationality: - Italy
Date of Birth: - 19/08/1973
Did you know: - He made history for being the top scoring defender in Serie history with 12 goals during the 2000/01 season.
Coolness factor: - 8/10 (Good Pre-season performance, and didn’t really disappoint in the CL qualifiers either!)

2nd Candidate
Name: - Carlos Alberto Gamarra
Nationality: - Paraguay
Date of Birth: - 17/02/1971
Did you know: - Gamarra is regarded as a world class defender in South America for not committing a single foul in Paraguay’s (As well as concededing only two goals in 393 minutes of football) 1998 World Cup run.
Coolness factor: - 7/10 (Had a good Copa America, my only worry would be his ill tempered performance during the Argentina clash, he even argued with Kily? Not the Gamarra I expected)

3rd Candidate
Name: - Nicolas Andres Burdisso
Nationality: - Argentina
Date of Birth: - 12/04/1981
Did you know: - He received a standing ovation during his Tim Trophy exploits, and god what a performance!
Coolness factor: - 10/10 (I can’t see how this can go wrong, a fairy tale bound to happen, just ask Miccoli)

4th Candidate
Name: - Sinisa Mihajlovic
Nationality: - Serbia & Montenegro
Date of Birth: - 20/02/1969
Did you know: - Miha was transformed from midfield player into a centre back when he joined Eriksson’s Sampdoria.
Coolness factor: - 5/10 (Erm...Average?)

Well if we are to judge on their profile, the winner has to be Burdisso...Ok so it’s a lame way to judge and is quite bias, but I wrote the damn thing so screw it! :lala:

Current Ranking: -
  1. Burdisso (10 pts)
  2. Materazzi (8 pts)
  3. Gamarra (7 pts)
  4. Mihajlovic (5 pts)

How about International pedigree? It can count for something, especially for the opposition!

1st Candidate
Materazzi (8 matches) 2 pts

2nd Candidate
Gamarra (89 matches, 8 goals) 4 pts

3rd Candidate
Burdisso (3 matches) 1 pts

4th Candidate
Mihajlovic (63 matches, 10 goals...He's retired by the way) 3 pts

Current Ranking: -
  1. Burdisso (11 pts)
  2. Gamarra (11 pts)
  3. Materazzi (10 pts)
  4. Mihajlovic (8 pts)

Cordoba is just 173 cm, what about height? It’s not really important but it can affect the out come when needed?

1st Candidate
Materazzi (193 cm) 4 pts

2nd Candidate
Gamarra (180 cm) 1 pts

3rd Candidate
Burdisso (182 cm) 2 pts

4th Candidate
Mihajlovic (185 cm) 3 pts

Current Ranking: -
  1. Materazzi (14 pts)
  2. Burdisso (13 pts)
  3. Gamarra (12 pts)
  4. Mihajlovic (11 pts)

Ok, so now we judged them on their profile, international appearances and height…So what’s left? Experience of course, and how do you judge experiences? No not by the age (If age really did effect experience, than any one in who spent a while in …Serie D would add valuable experience  ) but by what they have accomplished during their careers.

1st Candidate
Materazzi (None) 1 pts

2nd Candidate
Gamarra (4 titles) 2 pts

3rd Candidate
Burdisso (10 titles) 3 pts

4th Candidate
Mihajlovic (12 titles) 4 pts

Current Ranking: -
  1. Burdisso (16 pts)
  2. Materazzi (15 pts)
  3. Mihajlovic (15 pts)
  4. Gamarra (14 pts)

Interesting results so far, but we have one more test to perform before we finish. Their Squad roles, what have they got to offer and what they most likely expect…

1st Candidate
Materazzi - He will be in the first team plans this season; his only concern would be to stop anyone challenging his position now and the near future. (4 pts)

2nd Candidate
Gamarra – He doesn’t face that much stiff competition anymore; expect him to start a few more games this season. Sadly I don’t think he can hope for more. (2 pts)

3rd Candidate
Burdisso – I am sure we all agree that the only player Materazzi has to really worry about is the young Argentine. Mancini surely has a lot of faith in him; Burdisso will start a handful of games this season. Expect to see him in quite a few different positions this up coming season.
(3 pts)

4th Candidate
Mihajlovic – In my humble opinion, the only issue Miha and us fans have to worry about is his fitness/form. He’ll want to be more than a squad player, while most of us don’t even want him in the line-up (Personally, I think he can offer us something this season…What exactly? I don’t know...) (1 pts)

Final Ranking: -
  1. Burdisso (19 pts)
  2. Materazzi (18 pts)
  3. Gamarra (16 pts)
  4. Mihajlovic (16 pts)

TADAAAAA! Well there you have it, my somewhat bias conclusion shows that the ideal partner for Cordoba this season should be Burdisso :D

Very interesting posts MoH. I too want Burdisso to partner Cordoba. Materazzi is good, but is prone to the occasional acts of violence or making a silly mistake or something. Burdisso just stands out way above the rest and the way Mancini, Fachetti and Moratti have been talking about him I am sure he will play an important role for Inter this season.

Judging from the injury experiences of the last 2 seasons, I believe that there will be 3 defenders who will be active in the first team. For 1 1/2 season, we played with 2 central defenders under Cuper. We had Cannavaro, Cordoba and Materazzi at that time (Not forgetting the reserves of course). But we don't have any problem of one of the trio lacking play time, although Cordoba was played on the left a few times. Hence; I believe that Cordoba, Materazzi and Burdisso will all have a decent playing time. Let's just hope it's Burdisso instead of Mihajlovic.

But the problem is the times when Cordoba is not fit. Materazzi & Burdisso are not the fastest of defenders and we will struggle against pacy teams like Arsenal. However, if Burdisso's reading of the game is as good as the Samuels and Maldinis, I guess this problem will be tackled. We always fear that a towering striker will cause headaches for Canna - Cafè but I hardly remember such a game. Let's hope the same will apply if we are forced to use Matrix with either Burdisso or Miha.

Nice post MoH. I also agree that Burdisso should be the guy who partners Cordoba in the defence.

Then I'd like Materazzi to be considered the 1st backup, Gamarra the 2nd, and Miha the 3rd.

I also think that Dellafiore could get a run, especially early on in the season where the defense is missing 3 out of the 5 CBs.

Interesting discussion here.

Well, to start off I think most of us here agree that it's important to avoid Miha in our central defense. One of the biggest reasons why I didn't approve of the Canna transfer was because Miha got a bump in our depth chart; the thought of alone of having that hot-headed, over his prime player attempting to stop a world class striker is simply scary.

Like many of the posters here, I rate Burdisso very high. I've been lucky enough to watch him play for Boca Juniors on an average of twice a month because I live in North America and the coverage of Argentina and the Copa Libertadores is great. He's a very mature player, aware of where he is and can read the game. Very confident player, has that elegance to him that makes him look comfortable with the ball to his feet. He's pretty strong in the air, the former Boca captain is ready to start in the Serie A if you ask me.

Matrix? I'll go out and tell you guys that I think he's a joke. I won't go on because he's one of us, but I piss in my pants when I see him in our line-up. Sorry, just my two cents. :)

Well I wouldnt go that far to call an Italian NT player a "joke"! ;)
Anyhow, its great to know that Burdisso has several vital charachteristics in order to play in our CD.

With Cordoba,Matrix, Burdisso & Gamarra we will hopefully see as little as possible from Mihajlovic! ;)
