This is a subject I have always wonderred about. Who was really the best . Was it Pele or Diego??

Can a mod please add a poll. :)

Personally I think it was diego cause of the fact that he took average sides and made them great while pele played in sides who had other great players like rivellino and garincha ,ect.

Sherif, you biased Manc! :D

Anyway, I would neither vote nor argue about them for I have never seen a full match of Diego, Pele or Best themselves. I also find it silly to argue about Maradona and Pele since the 2 of them didn't even play in the same position. Pele also never play in a European club, which makes it even harder to judge them for the 'Achievement' category.

Btw Han I dont agree with them because George never lasted but they alongside Cryff did say that. But anyway biased or not biased this guy was an angel with the ball, trust me.

My vote goes to the legend, the prince, the donkey, the one and only DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA.. Il Pibe :star:

And yes ive seen matches for Pele. Diego was on another world really.

Well, Stefan, I don't even know that! :D I have heard words that Maradona was a playmaker who played in the position as Zidane. Some said he was a support striker ala Bergkamp. Some even said he was a winger! :D I have heard so many versions of his position that I don't know who to believe anymore, unless Maradona can truly and has indeed played in all those positions. :D

About Pele, all I heard was that he's a striker.

Sherif: As I said, I have never watched a full game of those players you mentioned, only a few clips of their magic. I refuse to judge who's the better player with my petty knowledge of their famous tricks. Efficiency is much more important than entertainment.

I have seen videos of diego's goals the great ones and the controversial ones . I have also seen pele's goals. For me Diego scored the more spectacular goals.

And does that mean Diego is better? The subject is not 'who scored the better goals' but it's 'who is the better player'. Recoba scored much more spectacular goal than Vieri but Vieri is a much better player than Recoba, or perhaps, was. As I said in my previous post, efficiency is much more important than entertainment. ;)

Han I never said that's the reason he is beter in my first post I explain why diego is beter. If you look at the history of Napoli there is 3 era's the era before maradonna nothing, the maradona era best team in italy then when he leaves they disappear again. That shows what a great player he was when he took an average sides to 2 scudetto's . He played against the likes of bergomi, baresei, ect and week in and week out made them look foolish.

I honestly haven't seen enough of Pele to make a fair comparison between the two, but i know for a fact that he did not play the same position as Maradona. He was much more of a support striker while Diego is the classical playmaker.

However, it's hard to vote against Maradona. I've seen many clips of this guy and he's an absolute joy to watch. He just oozes with talent, the dribbling skills and the vision that he posseses just gives me the goosebumps. I've asked my father many times who's better between the two and he's always said it's Pele, but then again he's a die hard Brasil fan.

Anyways, it's simply to hard to choose between the two. One must vote due to personal preference more then talent, both are football gods.

Maradona scored the best goal I ever saw. Pele scored over 1000... And they played in different times so the play was much more different making it even harder to judge. So who to pick? I can´t make myself pick one over the other for the same reasons Handoyo stated. Yet I do prefer Maradona. That goal (dribbling everyone to eventually score...) is just printed forever in my memory. But I refuse to vote...

The better player was Maradona. You don't need to go back in time. You should just look at Argentina now. They have a MARADONA religion! And when he was hospitalised, look at the crowd. Yes, it is a popularity contest, and because maradona played in europe, i can safely say his credentials as the better of the two is proven.

Maradona of course!

In some years this question might be: Pele - Maradona - Ronaldinho...

I have a personal bias towards maradona..so I voted for him..
however, one has to see what he achieved..
he took an average napoli side to two titles in Serie A, against teams like Sacchi's Milan or Inter under Trap, who were in every aspect above Napoli. To put it in our times, it would have been like Zidane winning the league with Palermo, or Ronaldinho with Malaga. He was a team of his own...plus the simple fact that Pele is respected, but not loved, while Diego is LOVED, should speak volumes.

They were different players at different times with different qualities. One was a great play maker the other the best goalscorer..AT different times..

To me one captured the imagination of the world and the other carried the tourch to my generation..Now if he stays like this ROnaldhinio is doing the same.

However I do think that if we compare them to the players around them Maradona wins although Pele's scoring stands on a pedestal too. The reason I say that is despite Pele being the best in the world there were other players that rivaled his talent in different positions.Just take a look at the 1970 squad and you will see its full of talent.Pele was the representative but there were equally talented players.

I mean Garanchia(spelling) to me was a master at dribbling more exciting to watch on those tapes than Pele.Although Pele could dribble with the best too.

Maradona however was a class above what we were used to,DESPITE great players being around at the same time..

It will never be easy to compare but I guess you have to define the categories of what best means to you before arguing

Maradona was a playmaker and so was Pele! They played behind the strikers.
