Maradona in intensive care
Monday, 19 April, 2004, 19:44 GMT 20:44 UK
Diego Maradona remains in an unstable condition in a Buenos Aires hospital with high blood pressure, breathing problems and suspected pneumonia.

But doctors said in a statement on Monday that the 43-year-old was making "satisfactory" progress, and said his arterial pressure was normalising.

Family doctor Alfredo Cahe denied Maradona had taken a cocaine overdose.

Maradona, who has been battling drug addiction for years, is being helped to breathe by a respiratory machine.

The Argentina legend was admitted to the clinic with high blood pressure and respiratory failure just hours after seeing former side Boca Juniors play.

It emerged later on Monday he had also developed a lung problem, which appeared to be pneumonia.

"There has been a slight improvement between last night (Sunday) and Monday morning," said Cahe, who added that Maradona's life remained at risk.

"He is making good progress, but we will be following things closely."

Fans have been gathering outside the private clinic

A statement by the Buenos Aires clinic revealed: "Maradona is receiving medication to strengthen the heart.

"As he has developed acute respiratory failure, he has been put on a ventilator and therefore is heavily sedated."

Since being admitted to hospital on Sunday, Maradona has been visited by family and friends, including his ex-wife and their two children.

Former Argentina coach Carlos Bilardo, his former agent Guillermo Coppola and ex-Argentina international Hector Enrique have also been to see the stricken star.

Cristiana Sinagra, mother of his son Diego junior, said: "We expect him to heal as soon as possible. It's a tough moment but we're confident that he will he get better."

Well-wishers crowded outside the clinic as news of Maradona's plight spread, forcing police officers to cordon off the entrance and hold back the crowd.

One fan held aloft a photograph of Maradona in his playing prime, while a banner read "Diego, Argentina loves you".

In 2000, in Uruguay, Maradona suffered a severe heart attack due to a cocaine overdose.

It's hard to believe. He was a ball magician on the pitch.

He then began a long recovery treatment in Cuba, but since an overweight Maradona returned to Argentina, speculation and concern has grown over his health.

Our South America correspondent Tim Vickery said Maradona's general health had been a concern for many years.

"He was continuing to cast his shadow over the Argentine team," he said.

"And what a stumpy shadow it has become. He's put on a lot of weight and when, hopefully, he recovers from this, he really does need to get his weight down.

"He's putting a lot of pressure on a damaged heart."

Maradona enjoyed a colourful 20-year footballing career, moving to Catalan giants Barcelona for £1.7m in 1982 after the World Cup in Spain.

In 1984, he signed for Napoli for a then world record £4.1m and transformed a mediocre club into one of the best in Italy and with whom he won the scudetto.

Now at the peak of his form, Maradona led Argentina to a 3-2 triumph over West Germany in the 1986 World Cup final.

After leading Napoli to the Uefa Cup in 1989, Maradona again played for Argentina in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

But his displays were generally less effective than in 1986 and, although Argentina reached the final, West Germany's Lothar Matthaus was the star of the tournament and led his country to victory.

In 1991, Maradona failed a dope test for cocaine and was banned for 15 months.

Maradona performed in his fourth World Cup in the United States in 1994 but tested positive for a cocktail of drugs the day before he was due to make a record 22nd appearance in the tournament.

In 2000, Maradona tied with Pele for the accolade of Fifa's best ever player.

He has also been honoured with a musical about the ups and downs of his turbulent rags-to-riches life.

And despite his well-publicised drug problems, Maradona still has a widespread fan club with 20,000 members as far afield as Vietnam and Iceland becoming members of the "Church of Maradona".

I saw a documentary a few weeks ago, about him entering rehab in Cuba. He looked quite sorry for the things he’s done in the past...

Pele a football legend, but yet can’t stop doing so many embarrassing **** for money! The worst was that constipation commercial!!!!

“When I have constipation I use <Name of Medicine>” – Pele

While Maradona’s life seems to be a sad, sad Soap Opera, two great football legends, yet two people I don’t dare wish to be! :(

Have not forgiven him for the "hand of god" moment - he only has himself to blame.

Forgiven him?? I haven't thanked him enough for that and for his historic second goal. He did the world a favour otherwise england fans would have claimed that they are one of the world's greatest team.

Maradona returns to Italy Saturday 1 May, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Diego Armando Maradona has spoken of his near-death experience and plans for the future, including a football school in Italy this summer.

“When God decides that it is your time,” explained the legendary figure on Argentine television, “then I think He will come and take you. But I fight to stay here, having stared Death in the face.”

The former Napoli star was rushed to hospital a fortnight ago after collapsing with chest pains and breathing difficulties during a Boca Juniors match.

Supporters held candlelit vigils outside the building day and night, but now that he has recovered Maradona has already visited his favourite golf course.

“What I remember the most was the extreme cold that enveloped my entire body. It was frightening, and touching a radiator felt like a bar of ice.”

“I thank the extraordinary fans for their prayers and support,” continued El Pibe de Oro, “as they give me so much without asking anything in return.”

Maradona will always have a home in Italy, where he won two Scudetto titles with Napoli and his image still adorns the city walls in stunning murals.

“My plans now are to travel around the world, all the way to Afghanistan,” he revealed.

“But this summer I already have some work lined up in Rimini, where I will teach football to young children.”

Ah, thats excellent! Maybe by teaching football to children and doing good deeds, he can make up for the drug problems he has had in the past! :)

'Final chance' for Maradona

Maradona was checked into a psychiatric clinic without his consent
Diego Maradona's doctor has said the football legend's admission to a drugs rehabilitation clinic on Sunday could be the last chance to save his life.

Maradona, 43, was transferred there just three weeks after being admitted to hospital with a swollen heart, high blood pressure and a lung infection.

He left the Buenos Aires hospital after 10 days but was soon readmitted with digestive problems and fatigue.

Dr Alfredo Cahe said he was likely to remain in hospital "for some time".

The Argentine former football star has been undergoing drug rehabilitation for the past four years.

When he first checked himself out of hospital on 29 April, he embarked on an orgy of barbeques, fizzy drinks and golf, just days after being taken off a respirator and regaining consciousness.

It was hardly what the doctor had ordered and so it came as little surprise to his millions of adoring fans when the Argentine idol was readmitted less than a week later.

Alarmed at his behaviour, Maradona's ex-wife and their two daughters authorised his transfer to a secluded clinic which specialises in treating drug addicts with mental health problems.

They did so without Maradona's consent.

Speaking to reporters camped outside the clinic, Dr Cahe said he hoped his famous client would "wake up" and "take responsibility for his actions".

"So far, he hasn't done that," he added.

Although Maradona was diagnosed with a severe heart condition four years ago, following a cocaine overdose, Dr Cahe has repeatedly insisted that drugs were not the direct cause of his client's recent hospitalisation

=======================================
This is sad to read and hopefully they will be able to help him realise the damage he is doing to himself.
