He deserves every bit of criticism tonight, just like he deserved praise in recent times. His finishing one on one is shit, I just refuse to believe a dude that has his technique cant do better in those situations. Everything still boils down to instinct, which shouldn't be the case when you are alone in front of keeper.
The only criticism could be about his abyssal finishing last night, but apart from that he was great. He kept fighting and pressing, and running till the very end of the match. Real captain.

The only one that really bothered me was his last attempt on the Mkhi cutback. That was way too central of a hit.
Honestly, there's no almost way to guide that shot.
All you want to achieve there is meet the ball the right way to send it goalwards. You see them going low because any attempt to add weight may send it high and wide. Very high and wide.
If you send it goalwards, chances are you'll catch the keeper by surprise.

The way that was stopped by Trubin was simply magnificent. I recall De Gea pulling off saves with his feet but not like this one.

I'm sorry but you can't just brush off those 6 or 7 sitters like it's nothing. World class striker needs to bury majority of 1 v 1 chances, I don't care who the goalkeeper is. But this is who he is and I figure that lot of us got used to it and aren't really that phased by his normal repertoiare anymore.
Seeing pudgy slow Icardi score an excellent 1 v 1 goal against Onana last night was too much of a comparison for comfort too.

Misses upset me but those few unnecessary shots when there were unguarded players to pass the ball to straight up pissed me off.

C'mon... He was known for it that he tend to miss situations that WC strikers should score. That's why I didn't rate him as a WC striker.
But this game wasn't one of those games. This game was simply one of those games when the ball just doesn't want to go in. He was shooting all well but in his last opportunity, he could do better there.

Sometimes you get a game when you score 4 goals in 30 minutes. And sometimes things like this happen, when the ball simply won't go in.

I just hope it was just this game. And he won't start missing a few games in a row as he knows.

I mean, we are aware that Lautaro is not clinical enough, but honestly neither is Haaland. There's not enough top strikers out there that are also clinical.

Lautaro was not making mistakes yesterday. Strikers can have off days in terms of conversion, but all attempts were on target. And screw the technicalities that say if you hit the post it's "off target".

As others mentioned, if he plays like this every game he'd average over a goal per game.

Ball doesn't have the will of its own. It goes where the laws of physics lead it. If you want to give it a "perfect" shot, the ones who have to stop it will have a very little chance of doing it. (Look at Thuram's goal for example).

People need to stop sugarcoating our misses to the point of turning Trubin into the next Yashin or throwing the typical childish word of "hating" into the debate. It's not the first time we've missed dozens of chances in a match and it won't be the last time. We were lucky the misses didn't cost us points last night, but on other occasions we paid a heavy price for it.

Sure, if you are able to shoot with enough power and proper technique, there is a bigger chance to score in those situations Lautaro was yesterday... but it's not like fatigue, nerves and opposition players don't play a role in how you shoot mid-game.

Lautaro is having his best season and we actually have multiple shots on goal, compared to some cursed games we had with Mancini (second tenure), Spalletti and Pioli at the helm. As long as we keep creating chances, we will score and we will also not score some of those chances. That is how football works.

I was very pleased with his contribution and he absolutely demolished Benfica defenders. He hit the post twice with really good shots and got stopped by Trubin on the other attempts. I used to play as a striker and I know how frustrating that shit gets but I also know how hard you have to work to be in the right place over and over again. The guy kept a cool head and kept trying and trying. I rate Lautaro even highly after this game.

I was never a striker, but I played a bit as well and yeah, Lautaro just looks like the fulfilled potential from 4, 5 years ago. Those small dribbles where he creates a chance for himself, that's something he wasn't using as much as he is using now. Great to see.

Super unlucky last night. Frustrating - yes, but as someone previously said I hope he doesn't change a damn thing about his game. With a bit more luck he could've scored a hat-trick once again. Hit the woodwork twice ffs...

Do you guys know how other fans feel about him? Are they scared or impressed? Or do they think we overrate him? I am in a bit of a bubble

I know how I felt about eg Shevchenko or Dybala at Rube, I wonder if they feel similar about Lautaro

My issue was that his shots ‘on target’ were either too close to the keeper or straight at Turbin. My brother disagrees so maybe it’s just me but when I look at his 4 goals at the weekend some of his goals felt like he should have angled them better and that he got lucky. I don’t need an essay that luck plays a part in goals but he defo rode that at the weekend.

So when you throw him against a better keeper who will save shit that’s right at him you get him having an ‘unlucky’ night or hitting off target.

Dunno, I just feel he needs more shooting practice… to put games to bed and be more clinical. It’s the only thing that’s lacking as the rest of his game is great but it’s a big issue (for me).

I also heard, not sure if true, that he got man of the match last night and if that is true then fuck me 🤣😂

He really deserves his MOTM. Also all his off ball movements are tremendous along with his touches. All his execution was done right. I really don't get how Lautaro is getting criticized; I will skip the shots that hit the crossbar and post.
  1. The one he went around Trubin, the detail was nicely done by him; the following 2 pics were less than 1 second apart; it was just a big play from Otamendi, not a mistake from Lautaro, of course you can argue he could have hit it high, but it doesn't worth the risk, plus there is no guarantee Otamendi won't still block it. The only improvement from here might just be hit it harder and faster while keeping it low, but faulting him here is a bit crazy.1696431395200.png1696431417067.pngNot to mention, he had to twist back to shoot it, as his direction is not goal facing.1696431842965.png
  2. This is only a half chance, just look at the GK position and the defenders, also remember Trubin is better off closed down than dive saving. You can argue the first touch of him can be lighter, but not really if you consider 44 and Otamendi can easily recover the space on the right if he had taken a lighter touch. Extremely good play from Trubin.1696431980616.png1696432517847.png
  3. For the last one, 2 things to consider the angle Lautaro is facing, and the position of Otamendi; you can argue he can still to to twist himself 180 degree to reach the bottom left corner through the legs of Otamendi, but you will have less control of it or you just blast it high, which a lot of people criticized in the past. What he did was hit it fast, hard and low. Another tremendous play from Trubin.

For keepers like him, Kahn, Toldo; they just have to position according to the defenders & the striker and it will already close down a lot of the shooting angle; plus those are high reflex saves as well, notice the distance and the go to the ground timing. not as visually striking like diving to the corner and save it, but equally tremendous plays.

One last thing is when great players vs great players, it can go all or nothing. I remember there are times Ronaldo toyed Cannavaro, and there were games where Cannavaro made Ronaldo disappeared.
