Just when I started my new AAA senior season wit 2 new coaches, I tore my ACL in my first game. This was my first ever knee injury, it seems pretty serious....I wanna know if I'll lose any speed or if it will affect my game after I replace the ligament with surgery...anyone have any experience with ACL injuries?

I heard you get erectile dysfunction and may turn homo after such an injury.

Jokes aside, get well soon Mikey.

It depends on your recovery process. Did you tear the MCL as well? That's the worse case scenario IMO. You might look into physiotherapy if you really are thinking of playing professionally.

I am not a doctor, but I watched few Scrubs episodes and Neil Patrick Harris is my idol.

I don't have personal experience, but I have spoken to a friend who went through it, and been doing a lot of reading on football injuries in case I ever coach an amateur team or something...

The good thing is it's not career ending (it used to be). The most important choice you make is the doctor, as you need someone experiences who's willing to work with you for months afterwards and be committed to getting you back to play again.

The surgery is the easy part, what you need to focus on is rehab.

It's going to be a long and painful process, boring at many times, and definitely the hardest thing you have done in your life. You need to decide now if you have the heart to do it.

Every case is unique, but in general you should reach 90% of your previous abilities in 1 to 2 years. Some say you can never reach 100%, some say they are better than they were before.

Your speed shouldn't be affected because it comes from your Hamstrings. The problem is getting your knee to move. Are you ready for 2 years of very very hard work to achieve that?

All the best Mike. Wish you luck and health.

Not sure about the MCL Hamed. I'm still waiting on my MRI results. I'm already walking though, not sure if that can cancel that out.

Don't you mean a physiotherapist? I'm already seeing one if that's what you meant...

I definetly am going to work as hard as I can to make my knee better, playing soccer is one of the few things that gives me joy in life and there's no way this injury is taking that away from me.

Yes you're right, and your surgeon will also have some input into the type of therapy you go for depending on the extend of your injury and surgery.

good luck with this bro, I tore my ACL last year and my quad muscles died with it.. As long as u work at it u should get back to normal.. Just don't push it too fast and don't let the muscles in the leg waste away ;)

I never had any knee problems, just a little pain with patele ligament, but only because of tiredness..

Mike, knee is the most frightening injury you can get as a football player, it takes a lot of time, patience and good therapies to get through it.. You're young, and it will be easier for you, but don't mess with it..

I don't think you will lose any physical abilities, but you might be affraid to go to your limits once you get back.. thats why you have to be 100% prepared both physicaly and mentally..

I wish you very successfull recovery and get well soon.. ;)

Getting better all the time, especially now I know about training the quad muscles to keep the balance in the knee.

I can run pretty well, just been told not to ski again

Katie was a one off case, you dont want to know what this nocturnal ladette did to recover.

Mick, if you're already walking that's a very good sign. Normally you cant walk for weeks and even then you walk without putting any pressure on it. You will be back in no time.

In our sport (aussie rules) we probably have the most knee-reco's of any sports. We have many methods of solving that shit...hit me up.

You should be very careful with that injury, make every possible check before you start training again.

I have a friend with injured knee, most talented motherfukcer i ever met. On one holiday tournament he got injured, got out from the game. Five-six days after he didn't fell much pain and started with game again. on first training after injury he felt more pain that ever.

Than he made his next back-up after two months and he couldn't put his leg in one particular position without huge pain. Now he has block in his had and never want to try it again. He's happy that he can walk without pain.

Of course, your hospitals and medics are million times better and you will be better but don't hurry.

I wish you to get better soon.

well said Hal...if you are already walking on it than its obviously a good sign..

the best rehabilitation i can recommend is water activities and by that i dont mean swimming...

if you have a local aquatic centre nearby try to do as much slow tempo walking in the pool... and by slow walking i mean slow minimal movements of a foot or so per step...

there is a product called "shark cartlidge" and most sportsmen that i have known to have these types of injuries swear by it..its expensive as fukc though

dont train on hard grounds like concrete and indoor soccer fields or try not to train on thoses surfaces :)

Walking before or after the surgery is good? Even if you tear your ACL+MCL, you can walk (Samuel in that derby, Palermo even scored a goal after suffering it and before being pulled I think.)
