It is actually very rare that a coach asks a footballer to play outside of his role, because it would be obviously counterproductive.

But if it does happen, can a player really oppose? I have never heard or read that in a contract is spelled out what role the player has to play.

So you could make the case that yes, the coach can ask a forward to play in defense.

That said, do we really know exactly what perisic and Conte said to each other last summer?

It could be, for example, that perisic said something along the lines of: "I don't want to play LWB, because I just don't have it in me to run for 95 minutes".
