Let's do a hypothetical one.

Yesterday Ljajic played as an AM behind the striker and he did good, dribbled nicely, even scored a tap in.

So if we play all 4 - Icardi, Perisic, Jovetic, Ljajic - who should be the AM? IMO, Jovetic is better for an AM position and Ljajic as RW in this scenario. Good thing about our 3 -ic players, they can play in different positions, which makes Mancinis job a bit easier.

Who should be AM for me strongly depends of the defensive contribution of our wings. Jovetic is not a hard worker in defense, but i've read some people here claim that Ljajic running a lot and put a pressure on opposition. And if Mancini ventures to field all of Perisic, Ljajic, Icardi and Jojo, the former two should be on the wings and Jojo as AM. But they can shift positions during the game of course.

Let's hope Mancini feels the same way on the games where we field all of them together.

It's important for Jovetic to be on the thick of it, i think a lot is lost in his game if he does not play in a central role.

I don't think our fullbacks outside of JJ are competent enough defensively to play 4-2-3-1. I watched too much of Napoli trying to make that system work in Serie A recently to imagine it working here. And they played it often with Hamsik who is a better defender to than Jovetic or Ljajic, Callejon who runs and tracks back like a mofo, and with Higuain who is better at playing back to goal and linking with other players than Icardi

What is perisic like from a workrate and defense aspect, wera?

Perisic at times in the first league game for Wolfsburg played as a RB...his defensive contribution is exemplary.
I consider him the most versatile player we now have...

A win is unlikely, we already lost 2 derbies in the last 2 months, and this could be the third.

I do see Mancini playing four forwards, maybe not in the derby but in the future.

Not as a 4-2-3-1 though.

He used to play 4-2-2-2 at Man City

Handanovic
Santon - Miranda - Murillo - Telles
Perisic - Melo - Kondogbia - Ljajic
Jovetic - Icardi

Looks like a balanced line up on paper, except I'd prefer Santon/D'Ambrosio/Nagatomo as RWB and move Perisic to second striker position, JoJo as AM and Ljajic on the bench.

I think Perisic at RWB is actually what makes this line up doable. It's like the way Bayern Munich played Robben as a RWB or Italy played Giacherini. Two fullbacks converted to wingbacks can be too defensive and result in some shitty football ala Mazzarri.

And I like the idea of Medel being one of the centerbacks because it allows better distribution from the back

This is actually a good point. But Telles as far as I know is more of a wingback than a fullback as he is speedy and has good technique, looks like a Nagatomo with slightly better technically.

And agreed about Perisic, he might perform well there as an WB given his workrate, but against smaller teams I think he would struggle in that position.

Yeah I agree with that. My problem with Medel has always been his inability to pass the ball under pressure, but that's as a defensive midfielder. I think as a CB he would be fine in that regard.

Everytime Medel played as a CB for Chile, he was no less than fantastic. Him, Miranda and Murillo can work great together.

I dont see a reason why we cant win Merda.

Not a fan of suddenly pulling a new and untested formation out of our ass before a derby. With the newest arrivals, most notably Perisic and Melo, we were always going to see a shift in tactics, but I'm skeptical about playing a random 3-something-something all of a sudden.
