After the Gaspnightmare, I need to vent.
I'm still not able to come to terms with someone who said that the 3 man defence is not the only solution 3 months ago had become so adamant on playing it. I'm not able to come to terms over how Milito started all these games and how even novice coaches could actually outthink us tactically. And Gasp did nothing to change.. Anyways all that is gone.
Now the big question in MM's mind is who to hire and what to look for in a coach. From experience(too many since 1995) we can tell that a few people will have an input in this decision by MM. It will be first and foremost, Branca then the senators of the team and then offcourse Mourinho.
What the team needs first and foremost is someone who buys into the way we play and seriously believes in it. We cant really have a coach who doesnt know our strength. Our squad is used to playing one way and the characteristics of our players are good for a couple of formations. Its actually not just formation as even though Leonardo used the right shape, the roles of the players were very different to say a Mourinho or Mancio before him. Yes it won most of the games but in crunch matches we were beaten brillianty by inferior opponents. Any coach who comes in and says no I will play it my way should be immediately discarded or if hired, will be gone again by Christmas, as we've seen it simply wont work
Secondly, we need a good motivator. The talent is there, yes we've aged a little but they are still professional footballers and experience is needed on the pitch and we have plenty of it. We need someone to utilise it properly. We need someone to give our oldies a certain job which they are good at. For eg: we know Cuchu is good at organizing the midfield and covering the back 2. We should ask him to do just that. Yes he wont be as good as 2010 but say 10% below that level is also not really bad. We have to make most of the squad. Moreover, the younger players also need to be fired up, as they are going in cold mentally on the pitch. We need someone who can pump them up to a level where they are breathing fire and wanting to prove themselves on the pitch.
Third, we need someone young. We need someone who is closer to the ages of our senators so that they are on the same wavelength and its also a little better for our 20somethings to have someone closer to their age than to their dad's. Our players dont work with stern coaches, but they seem to be at their best with someone who they get along with. I mean Leo took us by storm in January and that says a lot.
Last but most importantly, we need someone who can keep Moratti happy. Someone who can take instructions from him and learn about the strengths and weakness about our team first and then make changes as he likes once he has the results. All said and done, even Branca is right about our shape. What coaches differ on is roles of our players. We need to tell our prospective coach in no simple terms that he needs to stick to this plan first, pass the test and then ask for changes and all this has to be done before we sign the contracts.
We have comeback from a worse situation last season and seem to be making a habit out of it, but for MM its make or break time. This is where the direction of our season will be decided.
