After the Gaspnightmare, I need to vent.

I'm still not able to come to terms with someone who said that the 3 man defence is not the only solution 3 months ago had become so adamant on playing it. I'm not able to come to terms over how Milito started all these games and how even novice coaches could actually outthink us tactically. And Gasp did nothing to change.. Anyways all that is gone.

Now the big question in MM's mind is who to hire and what to look for in a coach. From experience(too many since 1995) we can tell that a few people will have an input in this decision by MM. It will be first and foremost, Branca then the senators of the team and then offcourse Mourinho.

What the team needs first and foremost is someone who buys into the way we play and seriously believes in it. We cant really have a coach who doesnt know our strength. Our squad is used to playing one way and the characteristics of our players are good for a couple of formations. Its actually not just formation as even though Leonardo used the right shape, the roles of the players were very different to say a Mourinho or Mancio before him. Yes it won most of the games but in crunch matches we were beaten brillianty by inferior opponents. Any coach who comes in and says no I will play it my way should be immediately discarded or if hired, will be gone again by Christmas, as we've seen it simply wont work

Secondly, we need a good motivator. The talent is there, yes we've aged a little but they are still professional footballers and experience is needed on the pitch and we have plenty of it. We need someone to utilise it properly. We need someone to give our oldies a certain job which they are good at. For eg: we know Cuchu is good at organizing the midfield and covering the back 2. We should ask him to do just that. Yes he wont be as good as 2010 but say 10% below that level is also not really bad. We have to make most of the squad. Moreover, the younger players also need to be fired up, as they are going in cold mentally on the pitch. We need someone who can pump them up to a level where they are breathing fire and wanting to prove themselves on the pitch.

Third, we need someone young. We need someone who is closer to the ages of our senators so that they are on the same wavelength and its also a little better for our 20somethings to have someone closer to their age than to their dad's. Our players dont work with stern coaches, but they seem to be at their best with someone who they get along with. I mean Leo took us by storm in January and that says a lot.

Last but most importantly, we need someone who can keep Moratti happy. Someone who can take instructions from him and learn about the strengths and weakness about our team first and then make changes as he likes once he has the results. All said and done, even Branca is right about our shape. What coaches differ on is roles of our players. We need to tell our prospective coach in no simple terms that he needs to stick to this plan first, pass the test and then ask for changes and all this has to be done before we sign the contracts.

We have comeback from a worse situation last season and seem to be making a habit out of it, but for MM its make or break time. This is where the direction of our season will be decided.

SE SALTELLI....
Continuity.............

this is something that has affected us greatly in the past, and for me is the main reason why we are in such a conundrum at the moment. Mancini and Jose left a great cornerstone and legacy behind for us too build on over the past 7 years. In nearly 20 years supporting, i finally felt that we had built up some purposeful direction. Having won the scudetto for a many number of years in a row, coupled with our CL crowning, it looked like the great Inter of yesteryear was finally back again.

How wrong i was!

All teams have a certain trademark of play to them..... ours was to soke up pressure and blitz oppnents on the counter. Both Mancio and Jose found out quick that in order to be successful, this was the way to go. The league we played in was suited for it, and we had the right type of players to accomodate it. Jose found out quick that by changing the emphasis of this would be detremental. Thank god he wasnt thickheaded, and instead of drastically changing what worked, he made slight modifications to improve it. That was just the genius he was. When he left, what followed showed just what was lacking in our team. We didnt need a super tactician to coach us...this team coaches itself. Rafa came in and tried to add his own touch to our playstyle, and it backfired in his face. Instead of keeping it nice and simple, and continue to use what was working, he tried to change things up too his liking. Didnt really work. Playing a high defensive line, playing key player(s) out of position and using a zonal marking system just wasnt something that suited us. However he thought he was the smart one, and kept on going with it. Well we all know how that ended up.

Then came Leo.....a guy who had next to zero tactical coaching knowledge. Now theres a reason his record with us is better then what Jose achieved. No doubt Jose was the more succesfull coach, but Leos win % was second to none. Yes surely everyone will remember the BBilan and Shalke spankings, but like i said, he wasnt a very knowledgable coach. So how did someone like Leo, who has next to no experience in coaching, end up with a better average points per game then the Special One? Simple.....like i said, this team coaches itself. What Leo was, and he was truly great at it, was a great motivator. And didnt it show! Players looked to be enjoying themselves out there. There really was an essence of comradary and teamwork flowing through the team. Our players looked eager and hyped to play in games.

What we need in our new coach, and hopefully we get one soon, is someone who has great man management skills. Jose really was special, as he had not only the tactical knowledge of the game, but was great at handling player. If someone like Leo could do so well with us, imagine what a decent coach would do. We really have hit a rotten patch at the moment. Ive been really dissapointed by gasp. Dont get me wrong, hes not a bad coach per say...........hes just not the type of coach were looking for.

What we need is a coach that will follow in the "identity" of Inter. None of this attacking, fancy, mooving the ball around BS. What we play is slow, boring, drab, defensive, counter attacking football. And we are 8055 at doing it. It took Jose a few games to understand that, but the point is HE DID! I really dont get what Gasps problem was. He got pretty much what he wanted, and he wasnt totaly inept. But talk about hard headed...! This really should be a huge wake up call to MM and co. They already settled twice this season. Firstly is letting Eto'o go for peanuts, and secondly settling on Gasp. They should know that Inter play football a certain way, and its going to be very hard to change that way, unless you get a whole new bunch of players. Well we know thats never going to happen. Seriously though, MM and Branca have an uphill task in front of them now...theres not many availabloe managers to choose from.

To quote suneeto "we need someone whos not a 20 year veteran to come in and say this is how i play my kind of football, thus this is how inter will play". Its very very hard to select a coach, esp when management is trying to tell the coach how he should be doing his job, but if theres nobody out there willing to adapt, it really has to be done. Thats why ive come to a conclusion that we need someone relatively new, or for that fact a total newbie. Figo or Baggio i can see as really good motivators, which honestly is what we need most at the moment, and bringing one of them in could be just what we need. Having no preferable style of play, i'd think they would be more at ease to play our brand of football. Having played for this team, and having played inters way, they would know how to run things tacticaly. Like i said...the team runs by itslef. Even though players are all a year older or so, we still definately have a team capable of winning the scudetto, even after this start that we have had.

My personal choice would be Dunga though. Being South American, i could see him having a great influence on our players. Dunga is a peoples person. Yes he is hard as they come (hell he was one of the greatest hard men in the game), but i could see how having a person like him as a coach could help us, and positively motivate our players. Dungas style of play is somewhat similar to ours, the guys whole career was based on defense and sturdiness.....ring a bell? Many people hated him for what he did to brazils team, but personally i think he took their game to a different level. Defending as a team then hitting opponents quickly is his forte, something that would go down very well with our system and players here. He also loves deploying the 4231 which as we all know if used correctly can be a great setup for us. But tactical jargon aside, the biggest trait Dunga will bring to the table is his overall persona. This is what we need the most at the moment. Stories have been flying around that not many were happy with Gasp inside the camp, esp with what he tried to do on the field......personally i dont blame them. We need that someone to bring that spark back into our team. we saw it on our players faces when Leo was here, and hopefully with a bit of good fortune, we will see it again soon.

MM and branca have a massive task infront of themselves, as this next move is seriously going to make or break our season. Ive lived through playing crappy eufa cup football before, fuck i even remeber not qualifying for europe at all......its not a nice place to be, and i certainly dont want to end up there anytime soon. Cmon MM, i asked for that rabbit end of mercato and all you pulled out was Forlan. I asked for a rabbit, not a donkey, but oh well shit happens. Know though we really need a rabbit, otherwise we could be looking at a very very very long season ahead.

I say we should give 2 hoots for beautiful or attacking football. Let's get Catenaccio back in style :slick:

I begin to think that Branca is only a good negotiator. He doesn't have the qualities to be a good sporting director like Uli Hoeness or Adriano Galliani. He doesn't have the eye to know what kind of player or coach we needed.

I agree with Dunga black. I read a little deeper into him, and the style he prefers I think fits us well. Sure it's against what Brazil fans wanted, but we need that fundamental counter attack style Dunga would bring.

With Ranieri we might find that he is someone who will understand the way we play. Dont know if he can do anything else that I mentioned above. We might have hired the next Rafa or Leonardo, his appointment is that confusing.

Ranieri is a good coach, is just that he lacks the "luck" or others might call it the "touch" to win! Unfortunate as it may seem, considering the position we are in right now, Ranieri might be the most likely solution. I also like Dunga, although I prefer Ancelotti. Damn Branca, or actually common MM make a good choice and be patient with it!!! Inter's coach rotation is faster than the convinient store cashier next to my house

Its about making intelligent decisions. Moratti and Branca ( specially ) made a Burdisso in getting Gasp. A coach who has played a 3 man defence all his career gets hired then after 2 months, gets criticized for playing it ( Gasp would've been saying to himself, "why on earth did you sign me then?"

It shows mismanagement from our board, the pressure is getting to them or maybe it is the high expectations Interisti have from the club now or maybe Orialli gave valuable advice and we missed him. There is an air of instability within the club from the Chairman to the board to all the players.

I think Ranieri will be able to find a playstyle that suits our team. He has a reputation of providing stability. He can get our team going again after this horrible slump under Gasperini. Which is good, we need that right now.

What he DEFINITELY lacks though, is charisma. He does not have that 'persona', that Mou and Leo had.
I would not say that his appointment at this time is a bad choice, but it could end up biting us in the ass.

Will he be able to motivate our players? His history indicates he is not the one to get players fired up for the big matches. See: Valencia 1999 CL Final, 2003/2004 CL Semi-Final with Chelsea. 2009/2010 clinch period with Roma. Sigh.. guess we'll just have to see.

Ranieri will be shit, due to the lack of charisma/motivational skills, but at least will be a lot better than gasp.

Honestly you also need to consider the board backing the new manager getting the right players with a vision of how we should play, this summer we did not buy the right players for the 4-3-3.

Ranieri is fine for saving us, so we can get in CL. But he is no scudetto coach, and he will never be.

Ranieri is a fine coach for now. He actually fits the mold from the stand point his tactics are compatible to ours and he has been in this situations before.

I would agree that he's not a long term solution but thats not what MM/Branca are looking for, they need someone to stabilize the team and get results the rest of the year. One would hope that they don't think he's a long term coach.
