In fact, the term Asia used to describe Iran (ie Persia) alone when it was first coined

About time for a stupid penalty in the box if the US plays to form, on Grealish or Kane.

Surprised and proud about the result. So the "Great Satan" vs Iran to go through, maybe unless Wales does something special.

Good guy England giving his small little neighbour a lifeline and and a boost out of nowhere. Wales, please win and send them packing and Bale should tweet " Its going home"

Southgate making limone look good. 2 subs left the likes of foden & Trent and you don't use your last 2 subs.
Alexander-Arnold not starting is the biggest head-scratcher to me. I think he's a much more useful player than Trippier, albeit with defensive limitations.

Depends which way you look at this.

When Persia was discovered, there was not many civilizations around , so it's kinda of hard to determine what's what

All references to Persian and their ethnicity is language based which describes them (fars) as Indo - Europeans.

Well, you have constructed the term Asian in your mind as something far Eastern. I don't think anyone can pull that out of it either way.

The term was originally used (Assuah) by Anatolian peoples to describe what was East of them, which was Persia and its predecessors whilst the Greeks called the lands of the Persian Empire "Asia" as a result. And Anatolia was called 'Asia Minor'.
India was distinct from Asia, it was a land further from it. The parts of China/Japan etc were eventually termed 'Far East' by the same people who used Asia and India as different areas.

Similarly, Egypt was a known concept, yet Libya was the name of the region from the west of Egypt to the Moroccan parts of the straits of Heracl.... Gibraltar sorry. And Africa was the term for the dessert areas between Libya and whatever laid south of it, yet now you see that Africa as a term is mostly conflated with the sub-Saharan parts.
In fact, Nubia was the land south of Egypt that was occupied by black people, and "Ethiopia" was the term for any land that was inhabited by blacks in Africa. Nubia doesn't exist as a term now, Ethiopia is a separate country, as is Libya, and when you say Africa you think of the Kongo areas and anything south of Sahel.

People mean different things when they use the same terms, so sometimes sticking to the original terms makes it easier.
