Eurovision Song Contest 2005

I haven't heard EVERY song, yet, but here comes my yearly preview of this traditional contest. I've given up on the whole voting crap, as it's all politics and an Eastern European country will win. However, it's a great moment to listen to some great songs.

Last year was a fiasco and the song that was by far the best was beaten in the semi-final. That was Monaco's song, and I expect similar things this year.

Nonetheless, here it goes in alphapetical order:

Albania
Not a very good song at all, but not the worst out there. I don't like it whatsoever, and don't expect anything to happen with it.
Rate: :star:

Andorra
More or less the same as above. A bit better, but quite a poor song.
Rate: :star:

Austria
One advice; listen to the song more than once! It's very catchy and I am starting to like it more and more. It contains joddling and a sort of 50's music. Will either flop big or win. The chorus is not actually the best part of this song.
Rate: :star: :star: :star:

Belarus
Last year, I was probably one of the few who was fond of My Galileo. Belarus has a more normal song this year, but not at all inspiring or anything special with it. Sorta soothing music, but it lacks so much.
Rate: :star:

Belgium
A soothing ballad, that also takes a turn to faster. I don't hate it nor love it. Belgium usually have crap, but this is rather good. Could be that last years French song with Monaco has caught my ears from now on.
Rate: :star: :star:

Bosnia & Herzegovina
Will get a twelve from Sweden by far. Not only because of the amount of imigrants we have, but that this is a typical Swedish song. The song is almost even better in Bosnian than in English, which is the language they will perform with. One of the most catchiest chorus that enters.
Rate: :star: :star: :star:

Bulgaria
A ballad, but nooooooo!!!! Don't completely suck, but too much soul and jazz for my taste.
Rate: :star:

Croatia
As far as I can remember, Crotia has only had one good song in history. It was their debut year 1993, when Put had a brilliant song.
This Croatia song is so and so. Nothing special whatsoever. Won't make it far.
Rate: :star: :star:

Cyprus
Nah, I get the feeling I've heard the song before. Mixes oriental with pop and it's just not working.
Rate: :star:

Denmark
Thank you Denmark!!!!! People, don't get fooled by the start of the song and go to the toilet or something. The chorus is THE strongest in the entire contest and the song is equally good in both languages. This is Olsen Brothers class, and the cool sound will sadly fail completely. Denmark is emerging as one of the strongest countries year after year.
Rate: :star: :star: :star: :star:

Estonia
Teenage pop and therefore you'd think it would be my favorute. Well, I don't hate it. I could sing to this when I'm drunk, but it won't make it in this contest. Too repetitive.
Rate: :star: :star:

Finland
Seems to wanna copy Ireland or something. As usual (sadly) Finland in the ESC is one of the weakest countries. This is a ballad for once, but it's still quite weak.
Rate: :star:

France
Not yet heard it

FYR Macedonia
Nah, I simply don't like it.
Rate: :star:

Germany
Sounds like TATU in the beginning, and then 4 none Blondes. It's an okay song, but it's suited for movies and not this sort of competition.
Rate: :star: :star:

Greece
Will be represented by a gorgeous Swede, and she was a part of the group Antique. I had really expected better, but it's not strong at all. It doesn't suck either.
Rate: :star: :star:

Hungary
No, this one sucks big time.
Rate: :star:

Iceland
Would win if it was an Eastern European song. The song is ridiculously strong and good, and together with Denmark my favourite. Performed by Selma who the year 99 had the best song, but Sweden's crap song won that year. This song though has it all. Mysterious and catchy.
Rate: :star: :star: :star: :star:

Ireland
Is this really Ireland? Traditionally they only bring ballads, and when they change, they bring this?! The song is amateurish and extremely weak.
Rate: :star:

Israel
Sounds like a typical French ballad to me. Perfectly okay and you can listen to it. Not too fond of it though.
Rate: :star: :star:

Latvia
Sounds similar to Austria's song last year, I think. A ballad and it's okay. Very nice and soothing. Then it takes a turn to the faster and the song is even better. I don't know, I will probably like this song even more the more I hear it.
Rate: :star: :star: :star:

Lithuania
A BIG favourite in my eyes to be able to win the whole thing. Contains some rock, and it would be a shocker if this song isn't among the top five.
Rate: :star: :star: :star:

Malta
Was last year a target of the ridiculous voting, and was never a threat in the final. This year they have a ballad and a much worse song. Though, the old Malta style (which this is) has worked better. Sounds like a Disney song though, which is a good thing.
Rate: :star: :star:

Moldova
Inspired by Athena from Turkey last year. This version is much worse though. Extremely weak song.
Rate: :star:

Monaco
A French ballad, which is of no surprise. Like previously said, Monaco last year was BRILLIANT. This year it's just nice. I like the background music once again from Monaco, but this lacks any sort of creativity to mix vocals with music.
Rate: :star: :star:

Netherlands
Not bad at all, Whitney Houston. It's a typical Whitney song and her voice is more or less identical. A strong song that could go very far.
Rate: :star: :star: :star:

Norway
Their song is a huge hit in Norway, and it's a rock-group. Will certainly not succeed in this contest, but even I quite like the song. Expect my family to like it a lot though.
Rate: :star: :star: :star:

Poland
As per usual they bring the biggest crap. They only sing la la la during the whole song.
Rate: :star:

Portugal
Not heard yet

Romania
This song is going to win. It's an Eastern European song, and MUCH better than Ukraine from last year. It's a Eurotechno song, with a fantastic voice and music. I'd be very surprised if this won't win. The long break without any lyrics could be a problem perhaps.
Rate: :star: :star: :star: :star:

Russia
An okay song, nothing more nothing less. Too repetive though.
Rate: :star: :star:

Serbia & Montenegro
Last year they had by far the worst song, and ended up second. This song is almost equally as bad, but I expect politics to play its part once again.
Rate: :star:

Slovenia
Haven't heard yet

Spain
The start is the Ketchup Song which immediately puts you off. They think it might work though, and who knows? Don't like this song at all.
Rate: :star:

Sweden
My home-country and as usually, I'm dissappointed with our song. We might have a chance, because the guy is extremely popular among women (Joke can confirm this), and has charisma. The song however is very weak. Though, Sweden has a habit of ending up on a high position.
Rate: :star: :star:

Switzerland
Another favourite. Not like Switzerland at all, and they almost sound Eastern European. Warning for this song to be able to win.
Rate: :star: :star: :star:

Ukraine
The hosts usually comes with ridiculous songs in order to not be hosts two years in a row, since it would be too expensive. The pattern continues with this ridiculous song.
Rate: :star:

United Kingdom
Not English whatsoever, and very bad. Leave this genre for the Eastern European countries, please!
Rate: :star:

That's all! Who´ll win? ROMANIA!

She's been in Sweden for God knows how long, so I consider her a Swede. ;) She speaks complete fluent Swedish as well. This is from her official website: "Helena Paparizou was born and raised in Sweden from Greek parents."

Born and raised! :p

It's not as bad as I made it seem to be. It's actually quite good, but the chorus could be better. A potential winner though, which I failed to mention.

Finland is gonna win! (NOT) :(

Too bad that in the end the song doesn't count that much. It's not surprise when Sweden's voice goes to Denmark or Norway and Lithuania's to Latvia.

What is this contest? I have never heared of it before. Is it like a World Idol type of thing?

Is there a link where I could listen to some of the songs, Jimmy's ratings made some look appealing to me.

It's because it's European. :p It's a yearly contest that has been going on since like the 50's and is cultural by now. You either love it or hate it, and believe me, there are many that hates this contest and its songs.

My msn is stephane_dalmat@hotmail.com if you want me to send over the songs. I doubt you'll like them though.

What bugs me in this contest is that this isn´t country versus country competition so much anymore, it´s more like a singer versus singer. Nowdays foreign singer can represent any country they want and that is what´s killing this competition in a long run.

I for one hope that this norwegian singer who represent Finland fails miserably and i´m sure he will. Why should any finn be happy if norwegian wins?

I think this competition used to be a good/fair, but nowdays it´s all about politics [being nice to your neighbours] and some of their rules are just ridiculous.

I have always hated this contest if you like to call it that. The songs are absolutly crap and they have always been, I would rather listening to opera :yuck:

And since so many eastern european countries have joined, it have made it even worce, the moste of the times their songs are extremly identical, and those countries all ways vote on each other..

So it's obvious that it's gonna be a country from eastern europe.

If I'm free when they're showing Eurosong on TV, I always start watching it. But I always fall a sleep till the show is only half-way.
I just watch to see how my country is doing.

But Eurosong is maffia, its always the neighbour-country's who are working together to give points to eachother, even when the song is really really bad. No fair competition at all!!!

Slow songs on Eurovision makes me drowzy :p

Paparizou went to Sweden at the age of 7 I think. That's what she said on some interviews over the years. Antique was singing Greek songs, they didn't have many songs of their own....

My favourite is Switzerland's from all I have heard. Cyprus one is STUPID. That guy was the leader singer of a band that represented Cyprus a couple of years ago: "Gimme gimme" that finished around 8, quit good for us.

You have to know that the Eurovision winner is already known. It's always like this: Scandinavians voting each other. Russians getting the votes of former U.S.S.R. Greece and Cyprus trading 12s. UK giving high votes, or maximum to the latter ones, coz only our immigrants care about it. UK never gets any votes, last year literally! And Germans are voting for Turkey coz of the immigrants.
Only real voters, with nothing to win or lose are Malta, Iceland, Italy and Spain. Maybe some others but these are not normal to give out votes for national interest.

:star: GO GREECE :star: :star: GO CYPRUS :star:

The more I'm listening to Malta's song, the better I like it. It's quite a touching ballad, and yesterday when I saw the video of it, it becomes even better.

I thought Romania would win, but Greece seems to be emerging themselves as a huge favourite in my book as well.

Yesterday i heard for the first time song from Finland, represented by some norwegian dude. It wasn´t that bad i thought, but i still hope he lose.

Haven´t heard any other songs, but i hope Shiri Maymon [Israel] wins...
