10 years of FIFScariest days of my life and the small tremors are still ongoing (since the last 6 days). It all started from the noon of 25 April. The first shocker was of 7.8 magnitude (15km depth) and it kept on happening in regular intervals for around 2 hours 45 minutes. I went to pick up my sister from her friend's place right after it stopped.
Thankfully, nothing happened to our house, except for the boundary walls (one side badly damaged). But that is not the case with the Heritage sites in Kathmandu, some hundreds of houses are damaged but sadly, some of the towns have been wiped out.
We slept in open spaces the nearby ground (in tents) for 3 days. We kept on having the aftershocks (one was of 6.6) till the one at 3:00am this morning.
Since I work in the Telecom sector, I have been going to office from the very next day of the first big earthquake, as it is very important to have network at this stage for all purposes (mainly for relief works as well). Right after we had finished the meeting and about the leave the meeting room, there was another earthquake of 6.7 magnitude - another scary moment. All these big earthquakes were not of few seconds but it last for seconds/minutes. In the first one, me and my family could hardly walk out of the house, as we kept on slipping here and there.
Nepal is prone to earthquake but this big one was after decades and an unforgettable experience. I am glad that I am in Nepal at this stage together with my family.
It is already a poor country and tourism is one of the main source of income for the country. Sadly, it will get affected for sure. Another sad part is that we might be getting tons of aids/donations/help from the rest of the world, but most of which will go to the pockets of the politicians/some of the so called UN/INGO/NGO, etc. itself. There has already been conspiracy theories and actual events going on: India taking this opportunity to spy on China border (while helping a lot with the relief works as well); German embassy trying to take a German prisoner (drug dealer) away from the police custody (he had been sentenced to some years in jail - the Germany embassy later on solved the matter saying that it was a "misunderstanding" - prisoner back to jail again); embarrassingly our Prime Minister (was in Indonesia at the time) got to know about the event after half an hour from the tweet of Indian PM; our government not accepting support (like that of the proposal of around 10-20 helicopters for rescue from Chinese government) despite not having enough of it; lots of interesting stories and lots of blame games at this time !!
As we already knew before, Nepalese government and we Nepalese people were not prepared for this at all - despite knowing all this time that we are prone to earthquake. I hope all of us will learn a lesson from this and build this country.
