Zanetti: ‘Inter believe in Kovacic’
By Football Italia staff

Javier Zanetti assures Inter ‘believe’ in Mateo Kovacic, praises Mauro Icardi, and reveals he turned down Real Madrid in his playing days.

The former full-back celebrated his 42nd birthday yesterday, and spoke to Sky about his life with the Nerazzurri, having joined in 1995 before making over 850 appearances and becoming vice-President.

“Mateo Kovacic? As a club we’ve always shown total faith, we’ve always believed in him,” Zanetti said.

“He has a lot of principles, he’s a great lad and we’re placing a lot in him. He’s been one of the best in pre-season, we hope he can have a fantastic season and grow along with the others.

“As for Icardi, we hope he’ll have another great season. He’s young, but he’s already a great striker and he can still improve.

“Mauro is happy to be at Inter, and he understands the importance of wearing the Nerazzurri shirt.”

Zanetti spent 19 seasons as a player with the Beneamata, and reveals his love for the club led to him turning down Real Madrid.

“I was close to Los Blancos many times, but I always chose with my heart. My family has always liked it in Milan, and I’ve always loved Inter.

“Recently, on the tour of China, we had lunch with the Real Madrid President Florentino Perez and he reminded me that he was still waiting for me to switch teams and join Real Madrid!”

Finally, the Argentinian shared an amusing story from the treble-winning campaign of 2009-10, watching a decisive Scudetto match with compatriot Diego Milito.

“We were watching it [the Roma-Sampdoria match] at Diego’s house,” Zanetti recalled, with the Blucerchiati running out 2-1 winners.

“He was holding his daughter, and Samp scored the equaliser. Then they went in front. His wife told him that she’d take the baby, but Diego said no because it was going so well!”

ormer Inter striker Diego Milito reveals he turned them down, four years before his eventual move.

The Argentinian was the hero of the Nerazzurri’s treble campaign of 2009-10, scoring 30 goals in all competitions, including two in the Champions League final.

“I always decide with my heart,” Milito told Ole in his homeland, having rejoined his boyhood side, Racing Club.

“I once had the opportunity to go to Inter, and I decided it wasn’t the right time. I was saying no to Inter, but I went to [Real] Zaragoza [in 2005] to realise the dream of playing with my brother [Gabriel].

“I also thought I’d play a lot more in Spain, and that’s what happened. Then Chelsea were interested in me, and I said no to them, so I went back to Genoa [in 2008].

“I had a fantastic year, I finished my cycle, then I went to Inter, although in different circumstances.

“From the day I left Racing, I knew I’d come back. I thought I’d be away for three years, and it turned out to be 11.”

Former Argentina international Diego Milito has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the 2016 Copa Libertadores.

Milito, who plays for the Buenos Aires-based Racing Club, was set to hang up his boots at the end of the current Argentine Primera Division campaign.

However, Milito decided to play on for another six months after Racing defeated Independiente in the play-offs to book a spot in next year's Libertadores.

"I am happy to say I will play another six months at the club," the 36-year-old said. "I will stay to play the Libertadores.

"It was not easy to stop playing football, something I have been doing my whole life.

"We are in a moment to enjoy, a historic moment and one in a positive way. I think I can continue to contribute to this great group we have formed and enjoy another Libertadores.

"In June 2016 I'm going to retire, no matter what. This is my last six months as a professional player."

Milito spoke about the injuries that have plagued him for the past 12 months.

"I could not do the pre-season," the former Inter striker said. "I had pain in my knee and I said I'd rather not find out what it was.

"There were two paths; have surgery or not continue. But the support of so many people meant bit by bit it gets better."

So, Racing is coming to México to play a Copa Libertadores thing, do you guys think Milito will be coming with the team??? Because I'd love to see him, but then if he is not coming it would be a total waste of money traveling to Puebla and buying the tickets D:

That 2nd goal reminds me a little bit of the one against Juventus when Guarin smacked that shot and Buffon could only parry it into the path of Milito. Once the ball falls to his feet, you know the damage has been done.

Nope they never started together. Icardi didnt play in that Sassuolo game. But they played together for about 20 minutes if I recall against Bologna where we drew 2-2, Icardi scored 2 goals and a penalty miss by Milito.

Diego Milito has announced his plans to hang up his boots in June. The hero of Inter’s treble, today at Racing Avellaneda, was interviewed by Radio La Red and explained that he wants to go from being a player to being a coach: “In June, I will end my adventure as a player, my career will end when we close our adventure in the Libertadores Cup. I decided to attend a course to become a coach. I will still follow Racing for as long as I can, as a fan.”
