I am so glad the West Indies beat England in the final. I really wanted the WI to win the comp but I wasn't too confident due to their past form. This is a great achievement :star:

Concerning England at least they beat Australia on the way to the final. I didn't expect that result and it is still good they made it to the end match.

Mickey Arthur © Touchline PhotoUnited Cricket Board chief executive Gerald Majola confirmed on Thursday what has been an open secret for several days: Warriors coach Mickey Arthur will guide the South African national cricket team until after the World Cup in the West Indies in 2007.

Majola said that the six-man panel appointed to decide on the new coach had been unanimous in its recommendation of Arthur as coach.

"He is a highly qualified and successful coach, with outstanding leadership and personal management skills," said Majola. "These assets will certainly come into play to meet the immediate challenges of the 2005/6 season."

Majola stressed that former coach Ray Jennings had not been fired. "Ray was appointed in a short-term capacity. He knew that when he accepted the position, and he also knew that there were no guarantees that he would keep his position.

"We did take the results he had achieved into account in considering the appointment of the new coach. He was given the same consideration as the other six who were on the short-list," said Majola.

Jennings will join National Coaching Manager Anton Ferreira and High Performance Centre Manager Gary Kirsten in the elite programme to prepare players who have the potential to form part of the South African squad for the 2007 World Cup.

Majola said Arthur's appointment had been discussed with the senior players, who endorsed the process by which he had been appointed.

Arthur (37) said he felt honoured and privileged in becoming coach of the national team. "I know most of the players -- I have played with and against some of them -- and I have good relations with them, and also with the administrative staff."

He said that before the start of the 2005/2006 season, he needed to spend some time with the players, and especially with the captain Graeme Smith.

"We need to buy into a common vision of where we want to go, and how we are going to get there," said Arthur.

He dismissed suggestions that he was too young for the job. "I've been involved in the game for 19 years, and I've studied all aspects of it," he said. "I've gone through the ranks, from junior level up to the A side and the national cricket academy. I don't think I'm too young for the job."

Arthur appeared undaunted by the knowledge that he faces cricket's biggest challenge -- Australia -- in just six months time. "I think it's possibly the right time to play Australia," he said. "The team is playing very well at the moment. Our aim is to be number one in the world in both forms of the game, and once we've played Australia, we'll have a better idea of what we need to do to get there."

Smith said he and the team were satisfied with the process by which Arthur had been appointed. He said he had had a brief stint with Arthur in the South African A side, and had been impressed by his coaching style and his work ethic. "He gets the best out of his players, and he's definitely not a soft touch," said Smith.

Smith said he did not think the appointment of Arthur as coach would cause an upheaval within the team. "When I appealed for stability (after the first Test against England in Port Elizabeth in December), I was talking more about the need for stability within the team. We always knew that Jet (Jennings) might not stay.

But we've had more stability in the team, and the result is that more players have responded well."

Arthur has a challenging season ahead. Majola confirmed that a five-match one-day series against India in India was being discussed.

New Zealand will tour South Africa in October. South Africa will tour Australia in December and January, with a return visit by Australia immediately afterwards.

"We're looking to become the best team in the world in both formats of the game," Arthur said on Thursday shortly after he was named South Africa's new coach.

"To do that no player can be allowed to rest on his laurels."

Arthur will have a chance to see how close his money has moved to his mouth when South Africa, who are currently the sixth-ranked test team and fourth-ranked one-day side, tour Australia in December.

The world champion Australians will tour South Africa in February.

"It's the right time, because after that tour we will know where we stand if we want to be the number one team in the world," Arthur said.

Is Arthur, whose first-class coaching career began in 2001 after his retirement from playing, experienced enough to handle an international team?

"I've been involved in this game for 19 years," Arthur said.

"In fact, you could say that my masters degree is in cricket.

"I've been through the junior ranks as a coach, and I've coached the South African A team and at provincial level.

"If you're ready to take the position you're old enough."

Graeme Smith, who captained a South Africa A side that was coached by Arthur and toured Zimbabwe in 2003, disputed suggestions in the media that Arthur was not tough enough to stand up to the pressures of coaching South Africa.

"Mickey has a great work ethic, he's disciplined and he gets the best out of his players," Smith said.

"He is not a soft touch."

Cricket South Africa chief executive Gerald Majola, meanwhile, was at pains to emphasise that interim coach Ray Jennings had not been dumped.

"That position was not filled, Ray Jennings was in an acting position," Majola said.

"Ray Jennings was not fired, he was in a short-term position and he was allowed to apply for the position permanently."

Flying colours for new coach

Majola also confirmed that Arthur's interview with the UCB and psychometric tests gave him the edge over the other applicants.

Although the Warriors were one of the weakest franchises in local cricket this season, the UCB said he had been the strongest candidate of the six on the shortlist.

Majola said Arthur did the best out of six candidates in his interview and with his psychometric tests and his appointment was after an unanimous decision by the UCB.

He did not want to release the names of the other candidates and said the whole process was confidential.

I can picture it now.

Yesterday, being Friday, was a travel day in the Caribbean as the 46 member TWI television crew trundled on to the enchanting island of St Lucia for the next two one-dayers in the series between the West Indies and Pakistan.

Tony Cozier and Michael Holding would be in that bunch that flew out of St Vincent in the early hours of the morning, exiting on one of the world’s shortest runways. Two astute cricket personalities who have witnessed more heartache over performances, or should I say non-performances, of their West Indies team than anyone else. They will again be disillusioned following another loss to Pakistan in the first game of the series. They will be thinking about how to mask their immense disappointment the next time they go to air.

No doubt upon arrival in St Lucia they would not have been able to access their rooms yet. Both being laptop junkies at the best of times, they would have headed for the nearest outdoor bistro on the esplanade strip that possesses a Wi Fi hotspot, and logged on. Upon firing up their computers late morning on Thursday, they would have learnt to their astonishment that Ray Jennings has been sacked. Simply put, they were astounded that anyone was even thinking of that possibility whilst I was still working with them earlier in the week. Their comment was that anyone who could assist in putting together a substantial winning streak was worth retaining. Think about it from their point of view. The last times they tasted any real champagne success was when Holding was still charging in!

Now lets change tack. Whether you agree or not, Ray Jennings is no longer the coach.

Mickey Arthur has taken over the helm. There is no doubt that some of the South African players will not be overly pleased with the treatment Jennings has received. That is a far from ideal scenario in which a new coach is to begin. Mickey is a very special individual with a coaching style which differs enormously from Jennings. Is he going to be strong enough? Time is on his side to ensure total commitment to his style of leadership and that is a blessing.

What lies ahead? Australia home and away. That’s what.

There can be no greater baptism of fire and the South African public has become accustomed to favourable results following a very lean period.

Tony and Michael, and others closer to home, will be watching with interest.

one team bowls, so theres one bowler and 10 fielders stopping the runs, while the team batting always has 2 people on the field batting. then when one of the 2 get out they get replaced they do this until 1 better is left or the overs finished and they swap sides.
