Hey guys, it's been a long time. Thought I'd pop up on this day and give you an account of how I lived the final of two years ago.
Anyway, it wasn't my idea of a great game. I never really liked Liverpool and when they made it to the final I thought, after hopeless performances in the premiership, that Milan has the CL all but wrapped up even though they stole the final from PSV who outplayed them in the semis. My feelings were echoed all around the footballing world. The thought of Milan raising another CL trophy pissed me off to no end! I hate Milan, I really, really hate them!!!! So reluctantly, I got behind Liverpool on the occasion but without really hoping much, or rather, my hope consisting of the cliche' that football is a funny old game.
As soon as the match started, however, it seemed that Liverpool were all to happy to confirm all the predictions from the pundits. Maldini scores from the first kick of the game. Liverpool look porous and disoriented, Milan too powerful to contain. Crespo's brace adds to Liverpool's woes and at half time it seems a done deal. Off they go to the locker rooms, some to recieve instructions on how to at least avoid a complete embarassement, some to celebrate, it was obvious from their faces they thought it was all over. Oh how I wished it would come back to haunt them. I hate Milan, I really, really hate them!!!!
I went to the kitchen to grab a drink and on the way dad asks:"What'ya think"."Here comes the fightback from the Reds" and we both laugh, he sincerely, myself bitterly. I hate Milan, I really, really hate them!!!!
And so I sit in wait for a second half that hopefully won't bring a complete massacre. Dietmar Hamman comes on for Finnan. What kind of a f***ing substitution is that, I think? What is Hamman going to change? For the first ten minutes or so nothing of significance happens, Milan seems to be cruising. Shevchenko shoots a free-kick, Dudek just parries it for a corner. And then it began...
Right on the break Riise takes it on the left, crosses, it is blocked, falls back to Riise who crosses again, Gerrard in the area, heads it...GOAL! A consolation for the Reds, a scant one but at least they remind everyone they are a football team not a laughing stock. Gerrard lifts his arms and urges his team on. An empty gesture or one of true belief? It took no more then two minutes to find out. Smicer recieves a ball from Luis Garcia, looks at the goalmouth. No Milan player is out to block him, they are confident the Gerrard goal is just a token episode. Hit it with all you got Vladimir, what the hell, I thought. He hits it...HE SCORES!!!!! 3-2!!!!! The game is back on!!!! Milan players are bewildered, they don't know what to do, barricade and defend or try to score 4th. The bench is also clueless. But the same can not be said for Liverpool, they know what must be done and tjey keep pressing on, the opponent is in a knockdown, the killer blow must be delievered! And it came sooner then anyone thought. Gerrard plays a one-two with Baros, enters the area, Gattuso pulls him down...PENALTY!!!! Protests were useless, Xavi Alonso steps up to the spot, oh please God, don't make him miss, please, please...Xavi Alonso shoots...nooooooooooo, Dida saves, ball falls back to Xavi Alonso....F***IING YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!!! I SCREAMED SO LOUD THE ENTIRE BUILDING HEARD ME!!!!!!
3-3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From absolutely hopeless to absolutely fantastic in the space of 6 minutes! Football, bloody hell! (Liverpool fans reading will pardon the quote, but it seems more then appropriate)
Take that, Milan, celebrating at half time, smiling from ear to ear coming back on for second half. I hate Milan, I really, really hate them!!!! All bets are off now!!!!
And now came the real torment, now the Reds had to hang on to this. But Milan are shell-shocked, they hardly can string up three passes together. Still, the story of that season was that they get a scrappy goal at the death and win. I hate Milan, I really, really hate them!!!! They press forward but the thrust of the first half was gone and Liverpool feel 10 feet tall now. I asked what inserting Hamman would change. Well, he shut down Kaka completely in the second half and allowed Gerrard to go forward! I never thought of that! But that's why Benitez is managing Liverpool and not me. The transformation of Liverpool is incredible. Hyppia and Carragher are rock-solid and even Djimi Traore looks like a football player. And Gerrard! He was here, he was there, HE WAS EVERYWHERE!!!! I bet Milan players were afraid to go to bed that night thinking they would find Stevie there as well.
End of regular time, extra-time is coming and passes more or less as the second half since the Xavi Alonso goal. Still, my fear of a late Milan winner remained. In the 120th it seemed to have come true. Serginho crosses, Shevchenko heads, Dudek parries straight back to Shevchenko's feet, who rushes on at full force. Surely from half a meter out ha can't miss, 999 times out of a 1000 anyone buries this, surely a striker of Shevchenko's caliber will...NO! NOT THIS NIGHT!!! Tonight was that 1000th time the ball is kept out in spite of everything!!! Dudek streches his arms and somehow, only he knows how, parries the ball over the bar for a corner. Incredible! Football hasn't seen anything like it since Jim Montgomery denied Peter Lorimer in the 1973 FA cup final! The look on Shevchenko's face was priceless, it was obvious he had a feeling it wasn't meant to be for them.
And so to penalties. Has Milan's luck finally ran out on them? They are to shoot first. Dudek dances on the line. Oh yes, Laziali and Scousers know where they have seen that before! Who could ever forget Grobelaar at the Olimpico? Does Dudek posses the same enchanting powers? Serginho steps up...AND BLOWS IT OVER THE BAR!!! Brucie's spirit is at the Ataturk!
For Liverpool it's Hamman but after waging countless midfield battles he looks absolutely knackered, dead on his feet, surely he is going to miss, there is no way he has the concentration he will shoot it straight at Dida, he will...HIT THE CORNER OF THE NET!!!Silly me to even think he could miss, a German never lets you down from the spot!!!!
Up coems Pirlo once perfect penalty taker but has started to make mistakes lately, could he screw this up as well. He runs to the ball...AND TAKES THE WORST PENALTY I'VE SEEN IN AGES!!! He practically passed the ball to Dudek! Or Dudelaaar, if you prefer!
Next is the luckless Cisse a man known more for broken limbs then goalscoring prowess. Steps up..AND SENDS DIDA ONE WAY AND THE BALL IN THE OPPOSITE CORNER!!! Surely, Milan are dead and buried now! But so were Liverpool at half-time! I quickly toss the thought out of my head.
Tomasson scores, I suppose someone has to among the milanisti, hell even the riom did way back in 1984. Then Riise has black thoughts coming back to me! What the hell was he thinking?
Kaka steps up and cooly converts.
All eyes are on Smicer now. Will he rise to the occasion, will he keep his cool? He takes the ball. places it on the spot, runs...SCORES!!!! Mr. Cool Penalty Taker himself, Smicer's countryman Panenka, would have been proud of this one!
And now Shevchenko must score, if he does not, it's all over, this time for real. On his face, it was obvious he was still thinking about the miss at the 120th. I knew he would miss and for once that night I was right. The angry shot at the net from the rebound of Dudek's arm counted for nothing. In shoot-outs it's "one strike, you're out"! Liverpool were hugging Dudek, their fans on seventh heaven and I lived through one of the most memorable footballing nights of my life.
Thank you Reds! YNWA! Now please, do it again!
PS Did I happen to mention how I hate Milan, how I really, really hate them?
