Well, I´m just saying what I have heard from the PL fans. ;) I personally never saw Materazzi at Everton. I barely saw him at Perugia.

No problem man.:) Its just that thing with players like Materazzi, Poborsky, Dacourt, etc.. will always be debatable. Dacourt may be one of the few really who proved himself with Leeds afterwards.

People are writing off Matrix in a bad way! Matrix is one of my favourtie players overall and i dont know why he is very underrated by many.
Matrix helped Perugia to win promotion back from serie B and was wanted by many Italian clubs. I remember Lazio being favourites to get him after the injury Nesta suffered back in 98. Eriksson said if someone will ever replace Nesta then it got to be Marco Materazzi.
Perugia didnt want to sell him to any Italian rival and therefore Everton came in and paid 2.7 M pounds and Matrix later became a fan favourite back in England for 1 year. Won player of the month twice with them and scoring important goals from free kicks. Sadly, the club couldnt keep expensive players like Dacourt and Matrix and he was sold back to Perugia with 3M pounds i remember.

He had a marvellous spell with Perugia. He was captain and i remember him scoring 12 or more goals for them(This is a record for goals scored by a defender). Inter then secured his services and in the past 3 seasons(One of the few transfers i really loved Moratti for), Matrix always did well with us and above all played with his heart. After his first season 01/02, he was voted by many to be in the Italian squad for the worldcup and the pressure on Trap was too much and he had to call him for thr trip to Japan.

Finally, the way Matrix played against Juve last season 2nd leg after a lot of months away was just class and this match simply says all about him. I wonder how many defenders with so many months out will put on a performance the way he did.

Yours,
Marco The Butcher (no.1 Matrix fan)

I 've known that Matrix went to England and actually saw him in action and he was very skillful yet then and even played as a left back . I haven't know why he went to England and why he returned to Italy . In England he wasn't average at all . he was Good .

Still Marco you haven't answer the question , and please guys stop getting off-topic !!

Yes, I live in England and Materazzi was a failure over here. To be honest pundits find it hard to believe that someone who was renowned for collecting loads of red cards and making some mistakes is playing for such a big club as Inter.

Back to the topic:

I said this earlier in another topic. Canna and Cafe are a proven defender pair. They played together several times during 2002/2003 under Cuper. They can and will play at the highest level.

Hmm…The real issue here is when was the pair ever questioned? Even though I think they are more similar when you compare them to Vieri and Adriano they still are formidable (For **** sake, just watch the Copa and can you honestly say Adriano’s performance is anything like Vieri’s? )

Exactly MoH my main man.

Vieri is actually nothing like Adriano. The fact that they are both tall doesn't mean they are play similar.

I think they are different types that are yet somehow often alike. And I do believe it can work.

The reason behind Vieri and Adriano not working isnt that they're too similar but they cant co-exist..There is a difference...I am not saying that there might be similarities but its the fact that they dont play off each other well that makes them struggle. When that happens its Adriano that makes the sacrifice and we lose on utilizing both's full potential.

Adriano - #10
To be honest I don't think Adriano and Vieri will be able to be great strike partners. I don't know if its because they are both left footed, their size, or whatever they just can't get it done together. There wasn't chemistry then and I don't see how their could be chemistry now. Its not like they had a whole summer to practice together.

Thats why I think Martins will be a better strike partner to Adriano then Vieri will.

Though on the original topic of this thread I think Cannavaro and Cordoba can work. Sure they aren't that tall but they are both good and fast and its not like all good defences in the world have tall players in them. Though Cordoba and Materazzi or Burdisso and Cannavaro might work better then Cordoba and Cannavaro together.

They can co-exist yes but so can Matrix/Cafe. Will the Italian captain agree on warming the bench ? I doubt.

Cordoba and Cannavaro can co-exist, but I would like to see a tall defender in there also, just to be safe. Although you're all saying Materazzi, we really shouldn't forget Burdisso, I really think he can challenge for a first team place.

I agree with Gismo and B2KDragon. Vieri and Adriano are different, but when they are partnered they never seem to hit it off....I don't know why, but they just don't click. When this happens it is always Adriano who makes the effort and tries to adapt to a new role, but I don't want to see him sacrificed in this way, as the guy is sensational. But I live in hope that the 2 of them can work.

Pretty much agree with you. Cordoba and Canna will be our no.1 pair but I hope that Matrix and Burdisso are in squad rotation with them. These 4 guys will form great backbone for our team..

ofcourse this duo can work man, Imo if they both were taller this would be the worlds best defence. But still they are great, great tacklers, can jump high and are very quick. I really hope that this season this duo can show how good they are, they also are the captains of there Nts respectively. That shows the talents of these players, its a pitty that Cannavaro has had a lot of injuries otherwise he would have been the worlds best defender without a doubt. I really hope this duo starts clicking and i also hope for the Adriano-Vieri combination as then we will be unstoppable!!

I'll like to see Canna and Burdisso in the middle, and Cordoba as left back, since I saw him playing a few matches there under Cuper, he was really good. He had a few problems with the left foot, but with his speed and defense technique, defensive problem on the left were part of the past.

If Burdisso can transfer his pre-season form into form in competitive matches for Inter then that is definately the defence that I want to see. Although, Cannavaro's injury is really serious and apparently Inter's medical staff fear it could be similar to the one that ended the great Van Basten's career.

That is really bad. Although Canna hasn't been at his best for us, I felt he had a good Euro 2004 and losing him forever would be a major blow.

That will suck....But I think that Burdisso have a good chance of being a regular, alongside either Cordoba or Cannavaro. If one of them fails. And I don't think that Mancio is affraid to put a star player on the bench.

Of course Canna-Cafe can work, but at this moment Matrix is better than Canna... Anyway, they're only 3 players for 2 spots, and we'll be playing plenty of games.

They can play if 2 of the 3 starters are not available (injured-suspended-to be rested) :)
