Yeah, as great of a player as Malidni has been, there wasn't a single year where he was better than anyone else. I am speaking of the years I've seen him play first hand, so that's between 1992-2005.

Are you telling me that there were better defenders than Maldini every single year between 1992 and 2005? Sorry Hamed but that's bullshit and you know it, I understand that strikers make the headlines and they get most of the prizes, but if they had to reward a defender for a change, where the hell is Baresi, Maldini and for that matter Bergomi's Ballon D'or?

Anyway, of the 3 giants I just mentioned, Maldini is the player who deserves it the most. He's one of the greatest Italian players of ALL TIMES. It's just pathetic that he didn't win it. That's just an objective evaluation of facts.

What I meant was something like this:

In all the great years that I saw Maldini play in, he was never the player with the biggest impact on a winning team. There was always someone else to outshine him.

When Matthaus and Sammer won the player of the year award, they had such a huge impact that they simply outshone offensive players.

Maldini never did that, he always has great seasons, but he never had as good of a season as that of Sammer or Matthaus when they won the award.

It's blasphemous that Paolo Maldini, as much as I detest him, has never won the award. But hey, it's a good thing for us as an Interisti and for the Milanisti, as much as they would love to see their icon get acknowledged by the media, fans & coaches & captains alike, I'm sure that they aren't really enfuriated by the constant snubbing because we all know that these awards are mor like a popularity contest.

Hamed, of course he was the best in many occasions, he just performs at such high level and so consistently, that it has become normal to see him like that.

I know you meant players in every role, still Maldini should have won it without a shadow of a doubt. The guy was a rock in Sacchi's Milan back in the Van Basten era, and he scored a goal in the CL final a couple of months ago. He won like 100 scudetti and 50 CL trophies, if he doesn't get the prize, who I ask you, whoooo??

I agree with Hamed completely...Logevity YES he is one of the best and as a lifetime award he should get it..

Can you say though that he was better than Ronaldo or Zidane or Sammer or Matthaues when they got it.I sure cant because to me those players had a bigger impact on the game as a whole during those years even though Maldini performed consistently...Do u know what i mean.

Maldini is one of the greatest defenders of all times, that's for sure!
He has always played for Bilan, the club he loved and gave 100% of him(same for the National team, it's a pity he didn't win anything with Italy)
Players who don't play just for the money are needed by clubs and fans!
We should all respect the devotion that palyers like Javier, Maldini, Totti show to the clubs they love!
