Bruno Fernandes would also struggle a lot under Conte. I can't see a position for him either in 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. He could only be useful in 3-4-1-2 but that system was really poor for Conte at Inter and i can't see a double pivot working with Utd midfield. It had worked at Chelsea because they had Kante running both for himself and Matic. Man Utd don't have such a player. They would also have a big problem on rwb. Wan Bissaka is a defensive rb and could only play as a rcb in Conte's system. There's Dalot but i don't consider him good enough to start for a club like United. Then there's the question what he's going to do with guys like Martial, Rashford, Greenwood and Sancho who don't seem to have a position in Conte's system. On the other hand, a Conte appointment would be great news for Van de Beek as i can see hi doing well in his system. I can see Utd playing like this if they hire Conte:
De Gea
Bissaka/Lindelof - Maguire - Varane
Dalot - Pogba - Matic - Van de Beek - Shaw/Telles
Cavani/Ronaldo - Rashford/Sancho
This squad is far from an ideal fit for Conte's system. Man Utd squad is built for 4-2-3-1. They will need big changes in the squad to adjust to Conteball.
I mostly agree with this. My guess is that the "Matic upgrade" will be the first thing Conte will do in January. Followed by a top CB and a RWB. IMO Bruno Fernandes could work well in a Conte system as an advanced mezalla, or even as an inverted winger in 3-4-3. Bruno has been used to attack a lot more at Utd, but he has the ability to press and defend as well, and he has the energy Conte needs from his players. I think Conte will convert him.
Conte coming will be bad news for Sancho, Martial, maybe even Greenwood, Bissaka, Ronaldo... but it will be good news for de Beek, Matic, Dalot, Shaw, Pogba, etc. That said, Conte could easily revert to his Chelsea style 3-4-3 which might suit the EPL & his resources more, which may give more playing time for the likes of Sancho & Martial than they get now.
Will Conte succeed at Man Utd? I think he will. With access to abundant existing & future resources, Conte can build his dream team. Even if its a big tactical change at Utd, Conte already has a lot of quality players there he can adapt to his formation. Players like Pogba, Shaw, Cavani etc are perfect for Conte-ball.
I've just 1 doubt. Lack of a top Director of Sport, someone to manage transfer strategy. I have doubts about Conte there, and at Utd there is no one with football gravitas to stand up to Conte's requests in the mercato. At Inter (and at Juve) Conte had Marotta, who is a shrewd operator and a good counter point. That is quite critical. Some top coaches (like Mancini IMO) know exactly what they want but this is rare, most top coaches (like Mourinho for eg) who need a quality Director of Sport on top of them to do the transfers for them. Conte IMO is somewhere inbetween but I suspect he is closer to Mou in this regard. Conte may succeed anyway at Man Utd. But Man Utd will need something like Marotta+Conte to guarantee success short term & long term.
