So I just wanted to take the liberty of predicting the formations for all the teams in Serie A; it won’t be thorough, and only for bigger teams will it display substitute XIs, but certainly take it with a pinch of salt.
This page will be updated as the transfer mercato progresses.
Also note that it’s organized alphabetically.
Atalanta
Colantuono generally sways between a 3-5-1-1 and a 4-4-1-1 type tactic.
So I’d be confident in seeing:
Or:
Don’t be surpised to see Migliaccio or Baselli in a DM position and Capello, Stendardo, or Yepes as starting CBs. Expect Raimondi, Biondini, or even Kone to sporadically star in the CM positions, and De Luca to play instead of Livaja.
Also, in the 4-4-1-1 type tactic, Livaja can play instead of Moralez behind the CF.
Tbh I think a 3-4-3 would accommodate all their star players into the starting lineup, but I can see that the coach would be concerned about defensive depth:
Note that there's a possibility of Baselli or even Giorgi in the RM position instead of Carmona.
Also, expect to see some appearances from Matteo Ardemagni in the CF position, who was absolutely brilliant in Serie B, having scored 23 goals with Modena last term.
Bologna
Pioli has occasionally used a variant of the 3-5-2 with the Rossoblu (it being very popular in Italy atm), but for the most part has used something along the lines of 4-2-3-1.
Don’t be surprised with Antonsson starring as CB or RB. Expect appearances from Abero as LB.
Also, there’s a likelihood of Krhin or even Garics starting in the central midfield with either Taider or Della Rocca (depending on how much depth Pioli wants in the MF), because that doble pivot may not be strong enough defensively.
Expect sporadic appearances from Alibec in place of Diamanti, and Acquafresca as CF instead of Bianchi.
So an alternate starting XI looks like:
Cagliari
Pulga’s men did very well last year in the second half of the season, but their starting lineup looks unclear because of the possible departures of Astori and Nainggolan. So I’m going to simply assume they’re not available next season. If they do stay, however, then the formation and the starting XI will not change.
Cagliari used a 4-3-3/4-5-1/4-3-1-2 type tactic under Pulga as a manager, and it looks likely that they will continue.
Unless they find a replacement for Astori in the defence, then likely Murru will have to take his place. However, if a new CB comes in, then Danilo will be relegated to the bench (with Murru as the starting LB). There is also a possibility of Ariaudo to take Astori’s place.
Also note that Cabrera was brought in to the club as the replacement of Nainggolan, but expect some appearances from Cossu in this area also.
The attack line is much more definite. Don’t be surprised to see Cabrera on the attacking wings with the departure of Thiago Ribeiro.
A 4-2-3-1 type tactic can, however, accommodate all their best players atm, and it doesn’t really require Conti to be on the pitch (considering his viability for injury at 34).
Overall this section is very inconclusive, because key players may either stay or leave, and Conti’s position in the starting lineup is uncertain.
Catania
Rolando Maran has expelled Montella’s 3-5-2 system, and instead installed a 4-3-3/ 4-2-3-1 type tactic at the club.
Or:
New acquisition Fabián Monzón will certainly take Marchese's spot in the squad (as LB), and don't be surprised if Pablo Álvarez becomes a starter as RB. Also expect to see some appearances from Izco in a fullback position. Biagianti will have appearances as the DM in the team instead of Izco or the CM instead of Tachtsidis on occasion. Don't be surprised to see Almiron in the starting lineup occasionally instead of Tachtsidis. Alexis Rolín will also take the starting berth of Legrottaglie in the starting eleven.
Castro will start in place of Lodi, but expect to see Catellani in the LW as well (who’s back from a loan at Sassuolo). If Gomez leaves, I’d predict an attacking trio of Catellani, Castro, and Barrientos behind the CF (from left to right on the field).
Substitute XI:
Or:
*Catania don't have a substitute player in this position
Chievo Verona
Giuseppe Sannino is coming in from Palermo, and it looks certain he’ll use something along the lines of the 3-5-2, although don’t be surprised to see a 4-4-2 type tactic in the season.
Thereau looks to be too injury prone at his age for a starter, so Paloschi will take his place. Farkas may come in on occasion as a CB (for Tavares), but not very frequently. Expect appearances from Farias and Lazarevic in place of Stoian.
Additionally, judging by the new recruits to the squad, it looks as if Sannino is intending to implement something like a 4-2-3-1 type tactic:
Fiorentina
Though Montella did well with the 3-5-2 last year and with Catania before, considering his new signings, it looks likely that he will use a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 type tactic (or one of its variants). Additionally the likely losses of Ljajic and Jovetic will force a tactical change away from the 3-5-2.
Or:
There is a possibility of Roncaglia at RB or Alonso at LB. Also, don’t be surprised to see Romulo as RB as well. Fernández may take Aquilani’s place in the starting eleven, and may have sporadic appearances in the RW. Expect to see Rossi alternating with Gomez as CF.
I’d be surprised if Montella gives Neto the starting berth as GK, so Fiorentina will probably have more activity in the mercato (for a GK and LW). Likely Illicic will arrive as the starting LW, and there are also rumors about Agazzi going to the Viola.
Substitute XI:
Or:
*considering Illicic’s arrival
** or Yakovenko/El Hamdaoui depending on fitness
If Pizarro does in fact leave, however, then Montella will have to find a suitable replacement, which tbh will not be easy.
Genoa
Liverani has just confirmed that he will use a 4-3-3 type tactic, and likely Genoa will be oriented around something like a 4-3-1-2 type tactic (with Liverani having used it as coach of Genoa Primavera before getting promoted to the first team):
Don’t be surprised to see Marchese in for Antonelli on occasion. Also, Jorquera may sporadically play instead of Bertolacci (as CAM). Floro Flores may star as CF instead of Gilardino (depending on the latter’s fitness). Don’t be surprised with sporadic appearances from Mandredini or Sampirsi in place of Polenta. Additionally, depending on whether or not Genoa want to maintain a counterattacking or possession style of football, Cofie may star instead of Matuzalem.
Hellas Verona
Mandorlini has revitalized the Gialloblu, pushing the fallen giants up to Serie A from Serie C, and I would expect them to hold off relegation this year. He has generally used a 4-5-1 formation at the club, and I wouldn’t expect any tactical difference this year. Of course if Jorginho does in fact leave, then there will be changes in the formation.
Don’t be surprised to see Donati as DM on occasion, or Maietta or González as LB instead of Agostini. Expect appearances from Martinho instead of Hallfredsson. Also, Cocco may come on sporadically for Cacia, and Rivas for Juanito.
Imho the team would be much more effective with Jorginho as RCM and Cirigliano as DM:
Or maybe even:
Judging by their purchases, these two starting lineups both look very possible next year.
Internazionale
According to Mazzarri, he intends to implement something similar to a 3-4-3 type tactic. There are really no certainties here, especially because of all the rumored arrivals and departures.
And whether or not he will use 3-5-1-1, 3-4-2-1, 3-4-1-2, or the standard 3-4-3 is indefinite. I’m not going to post a formation here because it will be highly opinionated, and examining all the tactical possibilities would take too long.
Juventus
Obviously Conte will stick to the 3-5-2, and likely there will not be many changes in the squad (except for the attack):
Substitute XI:
Barzagli will likely become a substitute in the defense, with Ogbonna taking his starting berth in the squad. Expect appearances from Pogba and Padoin in the midfield, and Marrone around the pitch (as a CB or a DM). Don’t be surprised to see Cáceres or De Ceglie on the wings on occasion.
There is a question mark on Vucinic being a starter, because Conte may be concerned with a lack of fluidity between the midfield and the attack using only Llorente and Tevez. Also expect Cevallos to make a few appearances this term.
Lazio
Petkovic has used something along the lines of a 4-3-3 type tactic at Lazio, mainly with the 4-2-3-1 type tactic (and the 4-5-1 on occasion). This seems to be a likely starting lineup:
Substitute XI:
Don’t be surprised to see Hernanes as a LCM, and Felipe Anderson taking the trequarista position.
Imo because of the injury crisis Lazio experiences every year, Petkovic will alternate many of the players throughout the season (Anderson for Hernanes, Biglia for Onazi, Ledesma for Gonzalez, Ciani for Dias etc.).
I’ve heard comments that Lazio’s team doesn’t look good on paper, but just look at the depth and balance in the entire squad. Tbh I think they can seriously challenge for CL places this year (especially with the arrivals of Biglia, Novaretti, and Felipe Anderson).
Livorno
Obviously Inter fans will want to keep tabs on this team, considering we’ll have some of our most promising prospects in their first team next year. Nicola has used a 3-man defense in the past, and I wouldn’t be surprised with him using 3-4-3 or a 3-5-1-1 type tactic.
Don’t be surprised to see Luci in for Benassi, and Dionisi on for Siligardi on occasion. Additionally Ceccherini or Lambrughi may start instead of Di Carli or Emerson as CB.
Imho a 4-5-1 type tactic would work really well with this squad:
Make sure you keep tabs on this team, because its rumoured even Longo and Duncan may be loaned out here as well.
Milan
Allegri has done reasonably well in Italy this term with a 4-3-1-2/4-5-1 type tactic, and not much will change in the starting eleven.
Substitute XI:
Expect sporadic appearances from Strasser and Traoré in the starting lineup, and more time for Niang and Traoré on the pitch. Don’t be surprised to see Saponara in the CAM position.
I would expect this when they use 4-5-1:
Substitute XI:
Likely they will be able to again contend for CL places, especially with their newest addition of Poli to the squad.
Napoli
Rafa Benitez will undoubtedly bring his 4-2-3-1 tactics to the Partenopei, and it will be interesting to see how they fare without Cavani up front.
The only issue with this tactic is that Mertens is on the bench to accommodate Insigne as LW (for Hamsik as CAM), so don't be surprised to see either Hamsik or Insigne on the bench at times.
With 4-3-3:
*Or Mertens
With the recent additions in the mercato, this squad is definitely challenging for the Scudetto, and may even impress in CL. For sure this team will be playing entertaining possession football next season.
Parma
Next year Cassano will be very motivated to be called up for the World Cup in Brazil, so it will be interesting how he does in Parma. Donadoni typically uses soething along the lines of a 4-3-3 type tactic; likely he will go for the 4-5-1, something he also used last year.
Expect appearances from Parolo instead of Chibsah or Galloppa, and Valdés instead of Ninis. Also, don’t be surprised to see Ampuero or another fullback instead of Galloppa or Ninis.
Cerri will be definitely getting more time as CF, and expect sporadic appearances from Felipe as CB and Mesbah as LB.
Another tactical option would be the 4-2-3-1:
Generally I don’t think they will do badly this year, having a relatively good squad (at least on paper).
Roma
Rudi Garcia will undoubtedly bring in the 4-3-3 to Roma, but there is still a hint of uncertainty about the starting lineup:
Totti or Marquinho could take Gervinho's starting berth, and don't be surprised to see appearances from Florenzi in the MF and Bueno in the attack.
Substitute XI:
*Can also play in Strootman’s position (RCM)
I'm not so sure about the competitiveness of this squad, regardless of any attacking rigor it may possess up front. Tbh its GK selection is trash, and imho Goicocchea was better than De Sanctis.
With proper coaching, this is a squad that imo can contend for CL places, although it needs improvement in the GK position (tbh Lobont or De Sanctis are not good enough, even Goicocchea was better). The RB position is also not very strong, with Maicon far past his prime, and Taddei currently being an absolute joke of a player (though Torosodis will be a good backup). The loss of Marquinhos to PSG will undoubtedly lower their chances for success in the league next season, but they will definitely be competitive.
Sampdoria
Delio Rossi has been a known advocate of a 3-5-2 type tactic at both Fiorentina and Sampdoria, and he occasionally uses something similar to a 4-3-1-2/4-3-2-1 type tactic. Nevertheless, there is a lot of uncertainty in the starting eleven because of possible departures.
Expect to see Rodriguez in the RWB position or Costa/Berardi as LWB. Palombo could be starting as a CB with Renan in the DCM, but it doesn’t seem likely. Pozzi and Sansone could also sporadically star in the attack instead of Eder and Gabbiadini.
With 4-3-2-1:
If Obiang is sold, then imo they have a serious problem, because I don’t see someone like Soriano or Maresca to be able to fulfill his role in the squad (which will be very large with the departure of Poli).
Sassuolo
Di Francesco’s men were great last year, having topped the Serie B table. He has used an offensive 4-3-3 type tactic both last year, and the year before with Lecce.
Don’t be surprised if Bianchi starts in the midfield, or Gazzola as RB. I’d expect a new addition for GK (they’re linked to Pegolo and Frison); Pomini is definitely not Serie A material.
Though this team definitely lacks the physicality and consistency for staying in Serie A, I’ll be looking to see how the attack fares in the league (Zaza, Berardi, Kurtic, Missiroli).
With 4-2-3-1:
Torino
Giampolo Ventura’s side had a few interesting performances in the beginning of the season. He’s one of the pioneers of the 4-2-4, and certainly we’ll see him use it again this term.
Don’t be surprised to see Meggiorini or Barreto instead of El Kaddouri, or Bellomo or Meggiorini in the LW position. Expect to see Basha play in the central midfield, and there’s a possibility of Ventura using Moretti or even D’Ambrosio in the LB position rather than a LCB, though I don’t think it’s likely.
With 3-4-3:
Ventura’s priority on the mercato atm is to find a new GK (Padelli is not starting material), and if possible, another DM and LW.
Udinese
Francesco Guidolin has been very successful with the 3 man defence during his tenure at Udinese, and it is unlikely that he will change the general tactic. Like many other teams, the starting eleven is still very uncertain because of possible departures, but they won't be considered in my prediction.
Don't be surprised to see Gilberto Silva or Pereyra starting on the pitch, and expect a few appearances from Bruno Fernandes and Jadson in the season. Di Natale may not be a starter next year, and I'd expect Maicosuel or Lazzarri to be in his place, with Pereyra or Lopez in the RF position.
Substitute XI:
The squad is very uncertain, because of the loans Udinese will make to Granada and Watford (probably at least one of Nico Lopez, Jadson, or Bruno Fernandes will go on loan).
This page will be updated as the transfer mercato progresses.
Also note that it’s organized alphabetically.

Obviously Inter fans will want to keep tabs on this team, considering we’ll have some of our most promising prospects in their first team next year. Nicola has used a 3-man defense in the past, and I wouldn’t be surprised with him using 3-4-3 or a 3-5-1-1 type tactic.
Bardi
Bernardini Decarli Emerson
Benassi - Luci
Schiattarella --- Belingheri --- Gemiti
Paulinho
Siligardi
Bernardini Decarli Emerson
Benassi - Luci
Schiattarella --- Belingheri --- Gemiti
Paulinho
Siligardi
Don’t be surprised to see Luci in for Benassi, and Dionisi on for Siligardi on occasion. Additionally Ceccherini or Lambrughi may start instead of Di Carli or Emerson as CB.
Imho a 4-5-1 type tactic would work really well with this squad:
Bardi
Bernardini Decarli Emerson Gemiti
Luci
Benassi - Belingheri
Schiattarella - Siligardi - Paulinho
Bernardini Decarli Emerson Gemiti
Luci
Benassi - Belingheri
Schiattarella - Siligardi - Paulinho
Make sure you keep tabs on this team, because its rumoured even Longo and Duncan may be loaned out here as well.
Milan
Allegri has done reasonably well in Italy this term with a 4-3-1-2/4-5-1 type tactic, and not much will change in the starting eleven.
Abbiati
Abate Zapata Mexes De Sciglio
Poli - Montolivo - De Jong
Boateng
Balotelli - El Sharaawy

Saponara
Niang - Pazzini
Zaccardo Vergara Vilá Constant
Muntari - Nocerino - Traoré
Saponara
Niang - Pazzini
Expect sporadic appearances from Strasser and Traoré in the starting lineup, and more time for Niang and Traoré on the pitch. Don’t be surprised to see Saponara in the CAM position.
I would expect this when they use 4-5-1:
Abbiati
Abate Zapata Mexes De Sciglio
De Jong
Poli - Montolivo
Niang - Balotelli - El Sharaawy

Muntari
Nocerino - Traoré
Boateng - Pazzini - Saponara
Likely they will be able to again contend for CL places, especially with their newest addition of Poli to the squad.
Napoli
Rafa Benitez will undoubtedly bring his 4-2-3-1 tactics to the Partenopei, and it will be interesting to see how they fare without Cavani up front.
Reina
Albiol Gamberini Britos Zuniga
Behrami - Inler
Callejon - Hamsik - Insigne
Higuain
Albiol Gamberini Britos Zuniga
Behrami - Inler
Callejon - Hamsik - Insigne
Higuain
The only issue with this tactic is that Mertens is on the bench to accommodate Insigne as LW (for Hamsik as CAM), so don't be surprised to see either Hamsik or Insigne on the bench at times.
With 4-3-3:
Reina
Albiol Gamberini Britos Zuniga
Behrami
Hamsik - Inler
Callejon - Higuain - Insigne*
Albiol Gamberini Britos Zuniga
Behrami
Hamsik - Inler
Callejon - Higuain - Insigne*
Mirante
Benalouane Paletta Mendes Gobbi
Chibsah
Galloppa - Ninis
Biabiany - Amauri - Cassano
Benalouane Paletta Mendes Gobbi
Chibsah
Galloppa - Ninis
Biabiany - Amauri - Cassano
Expect appearances from Parolo instead of Chibsah or Galloppa, and Valdés instead of Ninis. Also, don’t be surprised to see Ampuero or another fullback instead of Galloppa or Ninis.
Cerri will be definitely getting more time as CF, and expect sporadic appearances from Felipe as CB and Mesbah as LB.
Another tactical option would be the 4-2-3-1:
Mirante
Benalouane Paletta Mendes Gobbi
Galloppa - Parolo
Biabiany - Ninis - Cassano
Amauri
Benalouane Paletta Mendes Gobbi
Galloppa - Parolo
Biabiany - Ninis - Cassano
Amauri
Generally I don’t think they will do badly this year, having a relatively good squad (at least on paper).
Roma
Rudi Garcia will undoubtedly bring in the 4-3-3 to Roma, but there is still a hint of uncertainty about the starting lineup:
De Sanctis
Maicon Benatia Castán Balzaretti
De Rossi
Strootman - Pjanic
Lamela - Destro - Gervinho
Maicon Benatia Castán Balzaretti
De Rossi
Strootman - Pjanic
Lamela - Destro - Gervinho
Totti or Marquinho could take Gervinho's starting berth, and don't be surprised to see appearances from Florenzi in the MF and Bueno in the attack.
Substitute XI:
Skorupski
Torosidis Burdisso Romagnoli Dodô
Bradley*
Taddei - Florenzi
Marquinho - Bueno - Totti
Torosidis Burdisso Romagnoli Dodô
Bradley*
Taddei - Florenzi
Marquinho - Bueno - Totti
Sergio Romero
Gastaldello Salamon Regini
Palombo
De Silvestri -- Obiang --- Krsticic -- Poulsen
Eder
Gabbiadini
Gastaldello Salamon Regini
Palombo
De Silvestri -- Obiang --- Krsticic -- Poulsen
Eder
Gabbiadini
Expect to see Rodriguez in the RWB position or Costa/Berardi as LWB. Palombo could be starting as a CB with Renan in the DCM, but it doesn’t seem likely. Pozzi and Sansone could also sporadically star in the attack instead of Eder and Gabbiadini.
With 4-3-2-1:
Sergio Romero
Rodriguez Gastaldello Salamon Berardi
Obiang - Palombo - Krsticic
Wszolek- Eder
Gabbiadini
Rodriguez Gastaldello Salamon Berardi
Obiang - Palombo - Krsticic
Wszolek- Eder
Gabbiadini
If Obiang is sold, then imo they have a serious problem, because I don’t see someone like Soriano or Maresca to be able to fulfill his role in the squad (which will be very large with the departure of Poli).
Sassuolo
Di Francesco’s men were great last year, having topped the Serie B table. He has used an offensive 4-3-3 type tactic both last year, and the year before with Lecce.
Pomini
Rossini Acerbi Terranova Longhi
Magnanelli
Missiroli - Kurtic
Berardi - Zaza - Alexe
Rossini Acerbi Terranova Longhi
Magnanelli
Missiroli - Kurtic
Berardi - Zaza - Alexe
Don’t be surprised if Bianchi starts in the midfield, or Gazzola as RB. I’d expect a new addition for GK (they’re linked to Pegolo and Frison); Pomini is definitely not Serie A material.
Though this team definitely lacks the physicality and consistency for staying in Serie A, I’ll be looking to see how the attack fares in the league (Zaza, Berardi, Kurtic, Missiroli).
With 4-2-3-1:
Pomini
Rossini Acerbi Terranova Longhi
Magnanelli - Kurtic
Berardi - Missiroli - Alexe

Torino
Giampolo Ventura’s side had a few interesting performances in the beginning of the season. He’s one of the pioneers of the 4-2-4, and certainly we’ll see him use it again this term.
Padelli
Darmian Bovo Glik Rodríguez
Gazzi - Brighi
Cerci - Immobile - El Kaddouri - Farnerud
Darmian Bovo Glik Rodríguez
Gazzi - Brighi
Cerci - Immobile - El Kaddouri - Farnerud
Don’t be surprised to see Meggiorini or Barreto instead of El Kaddouri, or Bellomo or Meggiorini in the LW position. Expect to see Basha play in the central midfield, and there’s a possibility of Ventura using Moretti or even D’Ambrosio in the LB position rather than a LCB, though I don’t think it’s likely.
With 3-4-3:
Padelli
Bovo Glik Rodríguez
Darmian - El Kaddouri - Gazzi - Brighi
Cerci - Immobile - Farnerud
Bovo Glik Rodríguez
Darmian - El Kaddouri - Gazzi - Brighi
Cerci - Immobile - Farnerud
Ventura’s priority on the mercato atm is to find a new GK (Padelli is not starting material), and if possible, another DM and LW.
Udinese
Francesco Guidolin has been very successful with the 3 man defence during his tenure at Udinese, and it is unlikely that he will change the general tactic. Like many other teams, the starting eleven is still very uncertain because of possible departures, but they won't be considered in my prediction.
Brkic
Heurtaux Danilo Bubnjic
Basta - Allan - Badu - G.Silva
Pereyra - Di Natale
Muriel
Heurtaux Danilo Bubnjic
Basta - Allan - Badu - G.Silva
Pereyra - Di Natale
Muriel
Don't be surprised to see Gilberto Silva or Pereyra starting on the pitch, and expect a few appearances from Bruno Fernandes and Jadson in the season. Di Natale may not be a starter next year, and I'd expect Maicosuel or Lazzarri to be in his place, with Pereyra or Lopez in the RF position.
Substitute XI:
Kelava
Angella Naldo Dommizzi
Widmer - Jadson - Fernandes - Pasquale
Maicosuel - Lazzarri
Lopez
Angella Naldo Dommizzi
Widmer - Jadson - Fernandes - Pasquale
Maicosuel - Lazzarri
Lopez
The squad is very uncertain, because of the loans Udinese will make to Granada and Watford (probably at least one of Nico Lopez, Jadson, or Bruno Fernandes will go on loan).
