But Varane is not good if he is the lead and have to cover wide area, always need a compatible partner, do you think he would do well in 3 CBs set up? Plus his injury history.

It’s just genuinely uncomfortable if I were Thuram or Bisseck for example, who get on well with everyone. If an Armenian and a Turk could play alongside each other, we need to right the wrong.

And yes, it wouldn’t be a question of moral high ground, but a pragmatic measure to protect squad cohesion.
Given the current (lack of) information, it’s a coin toss whether Juan misheard or Acerbi really did lose his mind.
