We've had these types of penalties given for and against us, as have other teams.

I can only think of one reason they are given is to discourage players from having reckless tackles and injuring someone even if the ball was already in the stands.

Every game I watch these days where there is VAR review for penalties results result in penalties even when contact is late or minimal BUT I can see how the ref's decision here is consistent with yellow carding Dumfries earlier, i.e. foul when it's a dangerous play.

they would not have given the penalty if the ball went out of play before the slide was made. Thats what they were checking... Like i said, like it or not, its a foul and a penalty.

Similar were given against us. Last I can think of is Viola away last year (iirc). It's a pen everywhere nowadays, even though we might not like it.
