Moratti defends 2006 title
Tuesday 3 April, 2007
Massimo Moratti has insisted that his Inter side deserved to be handed last season’s Italian championship.
The Nerazzurri were assigned the 2005-06 title in the aftermath of the Calciopoli scandal, after Juventus were stripped of their last two Scudetti.
The San Siro outfit are well on the way to winning this season’s race, having extended their lead over Roma to 20 points, but Moratti insists we shouldn’t forget last season’s victory.
“We have a very strong squad which are aiming to win the championship again,” stated the owner.
“However, this wouldn’t be the first title we have won on the pitch as last term’s was also well deserved by us.
“But if we manage to reach the 100-point target this year then it will be even better. Having such a lead now has helped us be more relaxed.”
Moratti also commented on the latest reports suggesting that Luca Toni of Fiorentina might move to the San Siro in a swap deal including Adriano.
“I can confirm what I already said on Sunday and what was stated by Roberto Mancini, with whom I agree,” explained the President.
“This swap deal will not take place, with all due respect to Toni’s great value, because of an age factor and especially because we believe in Adriano’s potential.”
Moratti also rubbished rumours of a move for Juventus No 1 Gianluigi Buffon.
“Buffon is certainly the best in the world, but that is why I believe Juve will keep him,” added the Via Durini chief.
“I don’t think we will make any sensational signings this summer as I intend to confirm the current squad, including Luis Figo, and I want to exploit the young players at our disposal.
