Porto signs Diego

Porto sign Santos midfielder Diego

LISBON, July 30 (Reuters) - Santos midfielder has signed a five-year contract with European champions Porto.
Porto bought rights to the 19-year-old Brazilian for €7million, the club said in a statement.


Possessing excellent vision, Diego inspired Santos to their Brazilian championship win two years ago when he was only 17 and was hailed as one of the great Brazilian hopes.

But he hit a poor run of form earlier this year. In April he was involved in a slanging match with club coach Emerson Leao after being substituted and there was media speculation he would soon move to Europe.

Diego was made one of the scapegoats when Brazil's under-23 team failed to qualify for the Olympic Games. He came back into favour during the Copa America where he was often used as a second half subsitute.

Diego came on in the 54th minute of the Copa America final against Argentina last weekend, scoring one of the penalties as Brazil won the cup in a shoot-out.

It's a good transfer for Porto, if the kid can live upto expectation. Brazilian replaces another Brazilian (I know that Deco now has Portugese citizenship)

Good transfer, i love how Porto are building their team after losing so many players like Deco, Carvalho. Amazing how they have been able to keep Maniche and Costinha despite so much interest for them.

I expect them to be awesome next season. They've got one of the best's right back's in the world in Seitaridis, a promising playmaker in Diego, gifted right winger in Quaresma and two world-class DM's in Costinha & Maniche. Postiga also went there right?

Nooooo Marco, there's already so much stuff in the Transfer thread, it's only better to have some separate threads for players that don't concern Inter, don't you think?

Yeah, it would be impossible to combine transfer news regarding Inter and transfer news of the rest of the game. Keep 'em separate.

Well, I guess Marco is right.

It would be ridiculous to have different threads for each player's transfer. But when I opened this thread I had thought a bit differently. We have Spanish League, English Premeire League and Serie League; but Porto doesn't happen to be in those 3 leagues. Then I thought to open a new thread - "Portugese League". But then again, I thought it would be the same, having many threads: Russian League, Belgium League, Scotland League and so on.

I thought Deco's transfer would have attracted lots of posters, but I got it wrong as this is the 5th reply in this thread.

But may be we can change the name of the thread to something like "European Leagues" or ???

Deco moved from Porto to Barcelona and not the vice versa ....

My mistake ....

Anyway, I am still amazed that there were just few members who posted in this thread.
