but surely it should have a good OS straight out of the box? I would hardly call the iphone photos spectacular either, I can get a far better shot on my n97 than any of my friends can get on their iphones.

iphones are only now doing what other phones having been doing for years - video camera, multiple application support without jailbreaking etc.

Overclocking that is all fine, but if you then go and overclock one of the other phones mentioned you get a far better result again.

Fair enough if it's the only thing where you live, but here there are much better etc phones than Blackberrys, that give you what you need out of the box without needing to wait for updates/hybrids.

It's like me saying wow I can put windows 98 on my phone etc etc, but to make it a good phone I shouldn't need to. This is where Android is top by far.

You should get a great OS right out the box...but how many smartphones actually come with one? Android isn't all that. And I wasn't defending the iPhone 4 or saying it takes great pics. I was pointing out that the iPhone 4 technically has a lower resolution than those phone Vitomins mentioned yet still takes better quality pics. I hate iPhones.

And you are incorrect about overclocking. The Snapdragon in those HTC devices comes a bit overclocked out of the box. They can only hit 1.3Ghz as well. Same as my Omnia II.

I live in the US, so I have a huge market of phones available to me. I simply prefer customizable phones like Blackberrys and Windows Mobile phones to over-generic, everybody and their mama has one cuz their so simplistic Androids and iPhones. I'd rather be able to do whatever I want with my phone and modify it in anyway I want. And again, the Android OS sucks, but to each their own...

Haha...whatever you say man...saying any Blackberry is snappier than any Android is a complete lie, but whatever...I didn't think BlackBerry fanboys were as bad as the iPhone guys, but I guess I was wrong.

I have used all 3 of the major phones and I like things from each, but speed puts BlackBerry way behind the others. And I don't understand how people keep using the email defense for BlackBerry, I get all my emails on my Droid before they even hit my inbox on Gmail or Microsoft Outlook...
I'm just using empirical facts rather than conjecture. I don't need to lie about my phone being faster; it simply is. And same to you, Android fanboy. I'm sure noooooo phone in the world can match the Androids! Except for my overclocked Omnia II, a handful of other devices and my Blackberry :) And I'm not a BB fanboy. I actually like my Windows Mobile phone more. Having a registry editor gives you control of every aspect of the phone's OS.

I've used Androids, iPhones, BBs, WM devices, Symbian devices and Linux based devices. Blackberrys may be behind in speed, but it doesn't have to be that way. As my phone is the example...When you understand more of how a processor works you'll understand why my BB with only a 600Mhz processor, when optimized, can be snappier than a Droid with a 900Mhz processor.

Considering you think that way, I wonder what'd you choose if I offered you a free desktop computer with either a 2.5Ghz Pentium 4 or a 1.8Ghz Core 2 Duo.

But again, to each their own. I'm quite happy with my phone, as I'm sure you are with yours. Just wanted to clear up the ignorance going on in here.

GrandeInter10, I need your help, cos you seem to be Professor Blackberry.

So, I just changed my Javelin to a Curve 3G 9300. I'm kinda 'freaky' at this but I really really like the old BBM, the very first one which is v1.x cos I like my BBM to be something very simple, just names and messages that's it no need for pictures status etc etc etc.

Is there any way I can downgrade it back to that jurassic BBM? Thanks man.

Let's just say I'm not as old as Hamed.

Well that'd be kinda ambiguous I guess since I set the benchmark so high. :p

Jokes aside, there is just too many useless things in this new bbm that I can see so little text in the screen. Need to do so many scrolling up and down.

So GrandeInter10, any help? I tried Googling it up, but I can only see solutions to downgrade from 5.0.1 to 5.0

Thanks in advance man

Quick questions...The version of BBM you like is on your Javelin currently? You still have your Javelin right? If not, perhaps you've backed it up or upgraded the OS recently?

Yes, I still have that old version of the BBM in my Javelin, and I still have my Javelin (Shelved) but I'm using a Curve 3G 9300 now.

I never ever updated anything on my old Javelin, neither the OS nor the BBM. I recently backed it up to my laptop just so I can switch over the settings to my new phone.

Great. Don't touch that phone's files for now.
First things first, you need to have the USB drivers for both phones installed on the computer you're going to use to do this.
Now, download BBSAK from here: http://www.bbhybrids.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=78
Next, install it and run it. Connect your Javelin via USB first. Click Connect and BBSAK should say Pin: (insert your PIN here). Click Read System and you should get a huge list of all .cod files on the phone. Click Name so that it sorts them out alphabetically. Now you're going to look for a .cod named BlackberryMessenger or BBM. Click it so it's highlighted then on the left click the tab "Modify CODs" then click Save COD(s). Now you're going to have to look for all files starting in net_rim_bbgroup and net_rim_bb_qm and do the same (they should be mostly grouped together). Once you're done backing them all up you're going to go into Computer, go to your main hard drive (should be C: ) then Program Files, then BBSAK, then Backup. All the files you backed up should appear there. Now go back to BBSAK (the program), disconnect the Javelin, connect the Curve 9300 and click connect. Now under the Modify CODs tab click Install COD(s) and navigate to the Backup folder. Highlight all the files that I mentioned and click ok. Your phone will flash a white screen with a small white computer on it and arrows pointing up and down. Reboot and it should be on there.
HUGE DISCLAMIER though...that version of BBM might not actually run on your phone, especially if you're running BB OS5 or higher. That version of BBM is massively old Han lol but if there's a way to do it, it's this way. If this doesn't work or the file names are different (which they might be, since I've never seen .cods that old) than we could try another method to get those files out. Good luck!

Alrighty. Thanks GI10!

Will do it as soon as I get home from this trip. Btw, what happens if the installation fails in the new phone? I can just download the new BBM again for it, right?

Yes indeed, sir. If it doesn't work BBSAK should tell you when you try to install the .cods that they are incompatible or when you try to open it on the phone it'll say invalid file/exception error lang java etc. If it's able to open but looks all weird than you can just go into Options, Applications and highlight it and click the menu button and enable Compatibility Mode. Like I said though, it may not work that way but there's still another option.
