Argentina had midfielder Esteban Cambiasso sent off after a scuffle which followed Ecuador's second goal and will miss next Wednesday's clash at home with Brazil.

:depress: che peccato... I hope this doesn't ruin his chances with the national team, he must have been provoked to get involved in a fight. It's a shame he'll miss the Brazil game because I'm getting coverage of it. I was looking forward to seeing him.

For some crazy reason J.Zanetti was played at left back for this match, that's ridiculous. He's the best RB they have and they already have Sorin and Heinze who are capable of playing LB.

Ecuador 2 - 0 Argentina

Christian Lara (55)
Agustín Delgado (90)

He wasn't really provoked, it was just a little b1tch fight, fiesty match which Argentina should really finished off, Tevez was the only one truly trying, the rest were trying not to get injured ahead of the SuperClassico, and it was showing, Galletti is such a disgrace to the NT, I still see nothing special with that guy.
Pekerman experimented, normally Zanetti plays as a right flanker who defends and attacks, as he plays 3 at the back, but he tried some things out today.
This won't hurt Cambiasso's chances of anything, even Cambiasso wasn't a star for Real Mardid, the Argentine strucutre loved him and he is one of the more importanty players in the team, they're doing their best to make Mascherano and Cambiasso compliment each other and its working.

Now for Brasil.
Tevez, Riquelme, Aimar and co await.

That's good to know. The situation is much clearer to me now.

I agree about Luciano Galetti, that miss was the sign of a player who really lacks confidence. Why not use Saviola, Crespo, Maxi Lopez?

Anyway... I'm just looking forward to the 'superclassico'. I'll be supporting Argentina, due to their large Italian population and number of Inter players.

You have to admit though.. Ecuador have some really powerful players. Their long-range shots are really awesome. Why don't we sign Lara who can blast the ball in the back of the net from 40 yards out? :p

Maxi Lopez is injured, and to be honest, he is overrated. He's a Di Vaio type of player, the ball needs to be given to him to score..to be more specific..he needs to get the ball perfectly, and close to goal to score a goal, he's still young and improving, but he made the move to Barcelona too soon, seeing as how they play 1 striker, and have Eto'o, Saviola, Larson, Ezquerro ahead of him. Bad move, I hope he gets loaned out to a Deportivo (apart of the Luque deal) or a Atletico so he improves his game.
Saviola is only now getting back to the NT. Crespo is doing very well.
But you're right, primo, that Galetti miss was poor, Tevez's face said it all.

I don't think Saviola is going to play for Barca next season. I also read somewhere that Maxi is going to be loaned out to Racing Santander.

Maxi will develop into a good striker, I'm pretty confident of that. To be fair to him, he did score 2 goals from 2 starts in the La Liga campaign. Keep in mind though that he made 10 substitute appearances.

I'm not too sure with Saviola, primo. I hear Rijkaard saying that he will stay, then read reports that he is on his way to Atletico or Deportivo, not sure what to make of it, guess time will tell.
I hope you're right about Maxi, Argentina needs another powerhouse striker with Crespo coming to an end of his career. But Maxi is so overhyped in Argentina, its not funny...I think it was "blonde Batistuta" is what the River faithful were referring him to as, :dielaugh: clowns!! I haven't heard anything about the Racing rumor, do you know a bit about Santander, primo? Are they a real chance to stay up or will it be a long season for them?

I honestly don't know much about Racing, I just remember reading this article.

Racing In For Maxi Lopez
5/24/2005 11:45:00 AM
The precarious financial position of Racing Santander means they will have to sign players on the cheap or on loan this summer.
One player they hope to secure on loan is Barcelona striker Maxi Lopez who arrived at Camp Nou in January.

The Argentine is unlikely to see a great deal of playing time next season, and Racing believe they can cash in.

They are also being linked with Barca defender Fernando Navarro, and Real Madrid’s Juanfran, neither of whom can expect to be integral to their club’s plans next season.

Ecuador end Argentina's unbeaten run

Ecuador, who have already beaten world champions Brazil in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, produced another upset when they beat Argentina 2-0 on Saturday.

Second-half goals by Cristian Lara and Augustin Delgado handed Argentina their first defeat in eight games under coach Jose Pekerman and made them wait for the chance to guarantee their place at next year's finals.

Lara fired home from the edge of the area nine minutes after coming on as a halftime substitute and set up the second for Delgado to head home in the 90th minute.

Argentina, who still lead the 10-nation South American qualifying group with 28 points from 14 games, would have become the first team to qualify for Germany next year if they had won.

Ecuador, who beat Brazil 1-0 in Quito last November, are third with 23 points as they attempt to qualify for their second successive FIFA World Cup.

Argentina had midfielder Esteban Cambiasso sent off after a scuffle which followed Ecuador's second goal and will miss next Wednesday's clash at home with Brazil.

Despite resting their top players for the Brazil game, Argentina made a lively start and nearly took a 12th minute lead when Maximiliano Rodriguez shot wide from close range.

Pekerman surprisingly took off defensive midfielder Aldo Duscher after only 32 minutes, replaced him with forward Carlos Tevez and moved Javier Zanetti to an unfamiliar left back role.

Almost immediately, Tevez created the best chance of the half when he spun away from Giovanny Espinosa and picked out Luciano Galletti, who missed his kick with an open goal at his mercy.

Ecuador's best first-half chances fell to Delgado, who headed wide from Paul Ambrossi's cross, and Antonio Valencia, who broke away on the right and was denied by keeper Leonardo Franco's legs.

Lara broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, meeting Neicer Reasco's pass with a first-time shot from the edge of the penalty area which flew past Franco.

Argentina, looking disorientated, appeared to run out of gas in the second half and rarely threatened Edwin Villafuerte in the Ecuador goal.

Their best chance fell to Tevez in the 85th minute but he wasted it by shooting into the side-netting with Luciano Figueroa waiting unmarked at the far post.

Lara set up the second goal when he tricked his way past a defender on the edge of the area and crossed for Delgado to head past Franco.

Reuters.

One of the worst perfomances by Argentina. It could be the fact that Pekermen went with a defensive lineup and a couple of freshfaces and it back fired ultimately.

Another thing about Maxi Lopez... he has a EU passport due to his Italian roots. :) I never knew he was Italian. Lopez is a Spanish name. Must be his grand mother or mother.

It's a shame, i was looking forward to watching him in Wednesday's classic battle between Brazil and Argentina.

Does this mean that he'll be available for the Coppa Italia final?

When I first saw this topic I thought "Gosh, they're making a huge deal out of nothing". After reading it I can see how Cuchu has become an icon for Inter and their fans, it's just beautiful :star:

Gaetan: He still has Confederation Cup, therefore won't be @ Coppa.

Primo: Maxi's first name sounds pretty Italian. If I remember correctly, it was Maximilano, or something similar.

I agree. He's become a legend. When he first came I didn't think much of him, now I can't imagine us without him!

catanha: Maximiliano isn't an Italian name, as there is no X in the Italian alphabet. I think it Italian it would be Massimiliano. :)
