He's on loan

If Marseille want to sign him, they pay us 35mil. That means we get 35mil plusvalenza immediately.
If we want to 'counter' them signing him, we pay them 40mil.

So once you factor in salary savings + loan fee + the option, it will basically cost us 1-2m to have them develop Carboni and have him explode there

Like, the above scenario will happen if:

He explodes and becomes amazing this season
Other bigger clubs want to pay 50mil+ for him
We see space for him in the first team

Other scenarios:

He's not bad, but not amazing, for whatever reason Marseille will pay 36m for him but we dont want to keep him, then they'll keep him
He plays/doesnt play, isnt worth 36mil, then he comes back from Marseille without being triggered (the option)

in 95% of scenarios, I guess, for this season, Carboni comes back to Inter at the end of the season.
I still dont get it to be honest. How he will cost us only 5 million if we want to counter their offer of 35?

This is the part the confuses me; Marseille offers 35, we like the player as well, we cant just offer only +5m on top of their 35 and call it a day. We need give Marseille (brand new lol) 40 million euros, money that I dont think we have.

So we have to repay Marseille their offer + the adittional 5 to make it 40.

To get the player Marseille would have to pay 35mil. -> They pay that to Inter -> Inter gain 35mil and choose whether to make a counter offer of 40mil or not -> If yes, Inter already gained 35mil from selling Carboni and adds 5 mil to get him back. -> Effectively paying 5mil for a seasons loan in case he blows up and Marseille want to buy him.

Ohh gotcha.

What I thought was, if they decide to buy him and offer us 35 million, we won't actually receive the money if we decide to counter that offer.

I get it now :D

Not suggesting hes a mezzala at all, but his performances at Monza this year showed he added some length to his game and wasn't afraid of the gritty midfield battles. The structure of the deal shows we understand his improvements, just wish we'd give him a chance.

He's our player, we don't have to counter offer anything. They have the right to buy him for 36m, we have the right to re-buy him for 40m

I think the blind auction we had some seasons ago for some player that we had also loaned, confused me :D

But yeah, I didn't put the Michael Scott gif for nothing 😁

You're thinking of the blind auction for Viviano, which was co-ownership. In the case where a co-ownership wasnt resolved by mutual agreement, it went to blind auction, and you had to write what you valued the player at. In the case of Viviano, Bologna's sporting director took the amount they were willing to pay for 50%, rather than the player's valuation - they were supposed to win the auction but that mistake meant we won the auction

Could have at least gave him a shot during friendlies instead of Correa and Salcedo who couldn’t score on a free hooker
He's on vacation. Plus there is no playing position for him in our squad. Just let the kid get some (hopefully regular) playing time

Crazy hype around this kid. I hope he doesn’t let all the voices affect his development. I think in our system, he could be a really solid replacement for Mkhi one day. He has the most similar characteristics of anyone on our payroll imo.

after Marseille getting all these attackers, wouldn't be surprised if it happens.
Yeah I've been following this too. It doesn't look great anymore. At least he'll have competition and he's gotta earn his minutes if he wants to play.

I rather found it good for him, cause most of the attacking personnel they have are young ones, which means he will have a chance, I cannot expect Marseille is going to loan a 19 year old kid and make him the undisputed starter and rely all on him; also a fair competition for the kid is a good environment, he cannot expect minutes will just had it to him, he has the talent, he has the right attitude, I am following Marseille this season.

Also given De Zerbi track record. his attackers spread the minutes quite well, I am expecting/hoping Carboni gets at least 1000 mins in the league play this year.

Let's hope for the best.

I would be super pissed if he ended up getting less than 1000 minutes.

An excerpt from a Marseille season preview article:

Signing to watch

Marseille are once again returning to Inter Milan for an Argentine creative midfielder. However, Valentín Carboni will hope his time in the south of France fairs far better than his compatriot and former teammate Joaquín Correa. Carboni has the exact profile that Marseille are looking for with their new project under De Zerbi, and there is hope that he will be the player to act as the creative force that can knit the midfield with the forward line.

In an interview with Get French Football News, former Marseille star and England international Chris Waddle explained that De Zerbi has “got to have his player… who can do something different.” Marseille may have found that player in Carboni. However, it should be noted that the Copa América winner will have to adjust quickly to the pressure cooker environment in Marseille as he will be in direct competition for the role with Amine Harit. A player who looks perfectly situated to flourish under a manager like De Zerbi.

Later in the article, they predict De Zerbi sees him as an AM in his 4-2-3-1.
